William Herbert Maxwell

William Herbert Maxwell, 97, of Chestertown, MD, passed away on November 18 from complications of old age at the Herron Point Continuing Care center in Chestertown. Born and educated in Rochester, NY, he was the son of the late Herbert F. and Esther D. Maxwell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Skelly Maxwell; brothers John R., Robert and Herbert Maxwell; and sister, Ruth Maxwell. He is survived by his two sons, Michael William of Richmond, VA and William Christopher (Martha) of Rock Hall, MD; grandchildren, Michael C. Maxwell (Wynn) of Paradise Valley, AZ, Laura Maxwell Perry (Todd) of Carmel, IN, Michael Easton (Tracy) of Grimsby, U.K.; six great-grand-children, Henry, John and Lenna Maxwell of Paradise Valley, AZ; Elizabeth and Christopher Perry of Carmel, IN, and Luke Easton of Grimsby U.K.; and his dear friend and companion, Patricia Krehnbrink of Chestertown. Mr. Maxwell’s lifetime work was in the field of art and advertising with academic preparation at the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Early in his career he was employed as a visualizing artist by a Rochester advertising agency. Subsequently he was transferred to Philadelphia as art director on the national Philco account which was then managed by his brother, John. That assignment involved working with the Miss America Pageant and showmen Bing Crosby and Don McNeill - at that time radio stars. Later the brothers organized Maxwell Associates, Inc. At its peak, the ad agency employed some eighty people. After a year’s trial retirement William formed a new agency, headquartered in West Chester, PA, to service National Foam System Inc., Knox Glass Inc., Williams Brothers Engineering CO, Inc. and others. Nineteen years later with the company operating out of Kennedyville, MD, it was sold to Mullin Ashley Advertising. A memorial service will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7 , 2011, at Herron Point in Chestertown. Interment will be private in Galena Cemetery.
