Sylvia Ann Trayser

Sylvia Ann Trayser of Centreville Maryland passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. She was born in Baltimore on June 13, 1951, to Ethel Naomi Joiner and Phillip Gerard Trayser. She grew up in the Highlandtown community of East Baltimore, where she established lifelong friendships at St. Matthews Church. Sylvia loved the Eastern Shore of Maryland and cherished her childhood summers spent there with her Aunt Agnes Stauffer, her grandmother Annie Estelle Joiner, and her many cousins. She graduated from Patterson High School in 1969 and worked at Western Electric for thirteen years. She married James Garland Plumley on October 14, 1979, at St. Matthews Church in Baltimore Maryland. Sylvia had two children, Melissa Ann Plumley and James Travis Trayser Plumley, and worked as a homemaker while she raised them. Afterward, she had various jobs ranging from substitute teacher for the Queen Anne’s County school system, to LaMotte Chemical. She found her true calling while employed by Kent Center, where she worked as a job coach and a residential counselor until she retired. Sylvia had a love of gardening and a true green thumb. Her generous, and nurturing nature expressed itself through her love of animals and gardening. She took great pride in caring for living things and found great joy in watching them grow. Her father Phillip Gerard Trayser was an artist and from him, she inherited a natural sense of creativity and artistic ability. She loved to sew, crochet, and make crafts. Later in life, she used her talents to paint rocks for kindness, which she met weekly with a group of friends she called ‘The Rockers’ Sylvia’s other hobbies included reading, and traveling to Tennessee and Ireland. She is remembered for her warm-spirited nature, her positive outlook on life, her sense of humor, and her ability to make friends wherever she went. Those left to cherish her memory include her children Melissa Ann Plumley, James Travis Trayser Plumley, son-in-law Michal Bajdiuk, and Travis’s fiancé Cassie Walter. A sister, Susan Hershey, and niece Sheena Hershey. Nephew, Donny Plumley, and his wife Jennifer Plumley. Lifelong friends Patricia Freeman, Karen Brown, and Carolyn Willams. Cousins Billy Joiner, Patricia Joiner, Edwin Joiner, Joan Melvin, Carol Joiner, Cathy Crawford, Jamie Warfield, Pam Boulter, and family friends Jeff Starkey and Melissa Zador. Close friends Myra Wilson, Helen Benchoff, Mary Littleton, Phyllis Laro, and Peggy Lane. Animal friends include her miniature dachshund Lillie, and cats Emmy and Beau. Visitation will be on Friday, May 17, 2024 from 5-7 pm at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Centreville, Md. The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 11:00 am at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Rock Hall, Maryland. Pallbearers will be James Travis Trayser Plumley, Michal Bajdiuk, Chris Crossley, Jeff Starkey, Rondell Bryant and Brandon Leech. Flowers can be sent in memory of Sylvia to the funeral home, or if you choose, a memorial contribution can be made in her name to National Breast Cancer foundation
