Philip Joseph Maloney

The world lost a bright light when Philip Joseph Maloney of Greenwood, DE, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus, following a short yet courageous battle with cancer. He was 64. Born on May 24, 1961 in Wilmington, DE, Phil was the son of Lester H. Maloney, Jr. and Lucy Crabtree. A 1979 graduate of North Harford High School, Phil embodied a strong work ethic and an unwavering commitment to providing for his family. For more than 40 years, he owned and operated Maloney Drywall & Carpentry, where he built not only a successful business, but also lifelong friendships and a reputation for integrity and craftsmanship. Phil valued the simple pleasures in life and found joy in helping others. He was always happiest when lending a hand to family, friends, or anyone in need - a quality that defined his life and kept him busy. In his youth, he enjoyed Little League and later became an avid bowler. He generously volunteered his time with “Challengers”, a program for children with disabilities. Later in life, he found great happiness in camping and spending time with loved ones. Phil cared deeply for his family and his many friends. He will be remembered for his generosity, dedication, and selflessness. He always put others before himself. He is survived by his beloved partner of 13 years, Candy Vaughn; his mother, Lucy Crabtree of Mechanicsville, MD; his brothers, Lester (Ruthie) Maloney of Georgetown, DE, Stephen (Doretta) Maloney of Seaford, DE, and Michael (Jeanie) Maloney of Harrington, DE; his sisters, Ann Maloney of Mechanicsville, MD, and Lisa (Troy) Tittle of Forest Hill, MD; his children, Shayna Downes and Joshua Maloney; and his many cousins, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and godchildren. He will also be deeply missed by his faithful canine companions, Phoebe and Emma. He is preceded in death by his father, Lester H. Maloney, Jr., and his nephew, Adam Maloney. Phil left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him, and his memory will live on through them. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Kennedyville United Methodist Church, 12008 Augustine Herman Hwy, Kennedyville, MD 21645; a Celebration of Life will follow at 12:00 PM.
