Paul John Jones Jr.

Paul John Jones, Jr., of Easton, MD, a prominent Talbot County lawyer and respected civic leader, died at Easton Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, May 14, 2013. He was 69. He was born on October 6, 1943, in Teaneck, NJ, to the late Paul J. Jones, Sr., and Ann Cecilia O’Leary. After graduating from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame, earning dual degrees in Civil Engineering and Liberal Arts. Jones enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country as a Lieutenant aboard the USS Henderson in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. His mission involved leading a team in directing fire upon shore batteries in support of U.S. ground troops. For his exemplary service and leadership in positions of command, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1968. He later received a J.D. from the Georgetown University School of Law and a Masters Degree in Taxation from George Washington University. While working at the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, DC, he met and married Katherine Mack. In July of this year ,they would have celebrated 35 years of marriage. For nearly four decades, Jones was one of the most respected estate and tax lawyers in Talbot County, counseling a broad range of individual and corporate clients while frequently offering the benefit of his legal experience to area civic and philanthropic organizations. A member of the Navy League and VFW Post 5118, Jones was particularly supportive of public initiatives that honored our nation’s armed services and recognized the service of its veterans. Over the course of his career, he frequently emerged as a trusted advisor to local and statewide political leaders. He was appointed to the Critical Areas Commission by Governor Parris Glendening. Jones was an active, charter member of the Comptroller Peter Franchot’s Business Advisory Council and had previously served as a member of the Maryland Economic Advisory Forum, which advises the State Board of Revenue Estimates on statewide business and economic conditions. He enjoyed a range of literary interests and history and was noted as an avid reader, fluent on many current and historical topics. In addition to his wife, Jones is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth McIntyre (Jack) of Brielle, NJ, and Patricia O’Rourke (Tom) of Roseland, NJ, and two brothers, Daniel J. Jones (Margaret) of Needham, MA, and William F. Jones (Virginia) of Annapolis. A sister, Katherine McEntee of Tacoma, WA, is deceased. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Joan Rind, and brother-in-law Lawrence Mack. He loved and valued his numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at St. Michael’s Chapel at 10:30 am. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., in Easton on Monday, May 20, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery.
