Margaret Stevens Stack

Margaret Stevens Stack of Chestertown, Md. formally of Sudlersville, Md. died Sunday May 13, 2001 in the Heron Point health care wing, Chestertown, Md. She was 90. Mrs. Stack was the daughter of the late G.Walter and Lucy Jump Stevens. Her husband, Leon “Doc” Stack died in 1983. Mrs. Stack attended Queen Anne’s County public schools. She graduated from Towson Normal School in 1930. She completed additional course work at the University of Maryland and received her Master’s Degree in education from Columbia University. Mrs. Stack’s formal teaching career spanned 42 years. From 1930 to 1944 she was a teacher and administrator in the Montgomery County Public School system. She served as Principal of Fair Land Elementary School, Silver Spring, Md. She returned to Queen Anne’s County and became Supervisor of Elementary Schools. Later she was Supervisor of Curriculum, the position she held until her retirement in 1972. During those years, she attended The University of Delaware as a student and as a teacher. In 1960, she and a co-author published a widely acclaimed teaching word skills text, which was written for the elementary school student. Mrs. Stack has been active in civic and professional organizations. She was a member of the Queen Anne’s County Retired Teachers Association, Maryland State Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and the Chester River Yacht and Country Club. She had served as Chairperson of the Junior Red Cross and was a member of the Children’s Aid Society. For many years she had been a member of the Calvary-Asbury United Methodist Church, Sudlersville, Md. where her influence was reflected through her serving on many committees. Mrs. Stack was a Life member of the Sudlersville Memorial Library There are no immediate survivors. Memorial services will be Saturday May 19th. 2001 at 2pm from the Calvary-Asbury United Methodist Church, Sudlersville, Md.
