Kenneth Gregg Smith

Kenneth Gregg Smith of Easton, MD died on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at Talbot Hospice House, Easton. He was 76. Born May 11, 1930 in Auburn, NY, he was the son of the late Gregg A. and Roma VanDenburg Smith. After graduating from Port Byron High School, he attended Clarkson College where he earned his BS in Chemical Engineering in 1951. From 1951 to 1953 he served in Germany and France with the 432nd Corp of Engineering. In 1953 he took a position with DuPont where he remained until his retirement in 1986, working in New Jersey, Kansas, Alabama, Texas, California, and lastly in Newark, DE. He was a member and volunteer for the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and a volunteer for the local American Red Cross. Mr. Smith received his Captain’s license from the United States Coast Guard for which he delivered boats and was one of the original captains of the Nathan of Dorchester. He taught sailing at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and the Chesapeake Bay Sailing School, was a member of the Miles River Yacht Club, the Miles River Power Squadron, member and past Commander of the North East River Power Squadron, an educational officer of D5, Rear Commander of Seamanship of the National Power Squadron, a member of Boy Scouts of America where he held the rank of Eagle Scout, a member of American Legion Post 194 in Rising Sun, MD, and a member of the Navy League. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, the former Patricia Anne Kucirko, whom he married May 12, 1956; three children, Lawrence Smith, Gregg Smith and his wife Colleen, and Karen Connor and her husband Keith; a sister, Peggy Ann Measeck and her husband Kenneth of Queensbury, NY; a brother, Edward Smith and his wife Joyce of Penfield, NY; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 11:00 AM at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Easton, MD. Friends may call on Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton. Private burial will be at a later date.
