John Henry Joynes

On January 21st, 2024, John H. Joynes ("Jack"), age 83, passed away in Timonium, MD surrounded by his family. He was born in Baltimore on July 27th, 1940, to the late David and Madeline (Nee Tyler) Joynes. Jack is survived by his beloved brother, David J. Joynes, III. (Joyce), three loving nieces, Deborah Lynn Becker (Barry), Donna Marie Olsen (Rev. David), and Joanne Lanphar (Troy), and 12 great and 9 great-great nieces and nephews. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Jack dedicated numerous years to his career as a highly skilled draftsman at an architecture firm, where his passion for art and design flourished. His artistic talents manifested in various forms, from intricately detailed wood carving projects to expressive paintings and meticulous drawings. Particularly noteworthy was Jack's profound reverence for woodworking as evidenced through his crafting of wooden boats, toys, decoys, and an array of other captivating creations. Jack's ability to breathe life into raw materials showcased a unique blend of skill and passion that left a lasting impact on those who witnessed his creations. In the 1970s, Jack embarked on a new chapter, relocating to Grasonville, MD, where he wholeheartedly embraced life on the water. An ardent fly fisherman, he reveled in the peaceful expanses of open waters, finding joy not only in fishing but also in crabbing and embarking on quests for Indian arrowheads and other treasures along the beach. His connection to the water became a central part of his identity and he shared his skill and knowledge with his nieces and nephews, providing them with many cherished memories and imparting to them the joys of crabbing, kite-flying, and sandcastle-building. These shared experiences forged bonds filled with laughter, joy, and the simple pleasures of life. It was in these moments that Jack's innate warmth and profound love for family radiated most brightly. Jack’s legacy as an artist and craftsman, steeped in familial affection, will endure as a source of inspiration for those fortunate enough to have been a part of his life. A visitation will be held on Friday January 26th, 2024, from 12noon-1pm at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 106 Shamrock Rd. Chester, MD 21619. A funeral service will begin at 1pm following the visitation. Interment will immediately follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park 11365 Ocean Gateway Easton, MD 21601.
