Ethel Elizabeth Melvin

Ethel Elizabeth Melvin of Grasonville, MD, died on Sunday, August 25, 2013. She was 82. Born June 21, 1931, in Price, MD, she was the daughter of the late, Tilghman and Elizabeth Stant Cook. She graduated from Centreville High School in the Class of 1949. On August 6, 1949, she married James Erdman Melvin, Sr. (known as Hawke) of Church Hill, MD. Mrs. Melvin stayed at home until her children went to school, and then she worked for Perfect Garment as a seamstress in Grasonville, MD, until it closed. She then worked for Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville, and later for Chester Wye as a house counselor. Mr. Melvin died February 7, 2007. She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Grasonville, MD. Most of all she loved all her family dearly. She was a good wife, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her life was devoted to her family first, that she held together. She was the “rock” for the whole family. She was an avid reader of many books & novels, and enjoyed history and poetry. Everyone loved her cooking. She was patriotic for all those who served our country. She enjoyed her country music, flowers, plants, and hummingbirds. Mrs. Melvin is survived by her daughters, Judy Ervina Edelheit and her husband, Thomas of Price, MD, Janet Lee Akers and her husband William of Grasonville, MD; two sons, James E. Melvin, Jr., and his wife, Ilene of Grasonville, MD, and Donald Wayne Melvin and his wife, Linda of Grasonville, MD; a sister, Lorraine Hunter of Grasonville, MD; nine grandchildren, Judy Lynn Kolanda, Adam Thomas Edelheit, Jessica Lynn Akers, Julie Ann Darling, James E. Melvin, III, Jonias Norwood Melvin, Jordan C. Melvin, Jennifer Elizabeth Dudley, and Donald Wayne Melvin, II; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by five sisters, Margaret Coleman, Loretta Cook, Betty Leinart, Darlene Eaton, and Rebecca Cook; and six brothers, Joseph Cook, Dudley Cook, Floyd Cook, Ronnie Cook, Arly Cook, and Wesley Cook; and a grandson, James (Jamie) Melvin. Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, MD, on Thursday, August 29, 2013, at 11 a.m. where friends may call from 6- 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Burial will be at Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville, MD.
