Elaine Bell Dillehunt

Elaine B. Dillehunt of Chester, MD, died on Friday December 9, 2016, at Arcadia Assisted Living in Chester, MD. She was 89. Born on October 8, 1927, in Charlottesville, VA, she was the daughter of the late Ernest T. and Virgie Dinges Berry. Graduate from McIntire High School in Charlottesville, VA, in 1944. She attended Madison State College in Harrisonburg, VA, in 1944 to 1945. She was employed at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, VA, from 1945 to 1950; and the Veterans Administration in Baltimore 1950 to 1955. She married Robert H. Dillehunt, who she met at a Past Commander’s Ball in Baltimore City in January of 1955. After giving birth to three sons, she went to work for Dept. of Forests and Parks and Department of Natural Resources for the State of Maryland in Annapolis, MD. From 1962 to 1992 she was a student at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, MD, taking night courses in Accounting and Computer Operations for four years. She retired from the Dept. of Natural Resources on January 1, 1993, with over 29 years of state service as a Fiscal Associate IT. After retiring, she became active in Chester Homemakers, AARP, New Life Christian Outreach in Chester, MD, and Kent Island Senior Center. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, gardening, swimming, and line dancing. She enjoyed playing Bingo at KI Estates Community Hall, and taking bus trips with AARP and the Senior Center. She joined the Red Hat Society and enjoyed activities with them. Mrs. Dillehunt is survived by her son, Nelson Dillehunt of Charlottesville, VA; son, John Dillehunt and wife Laura of Queenstown, MD; four grandchildren, Lori Ann Dillehunt, Joseph Dillehunt (Shannon), David Dillehunt (Kristen), and Christopher Dillehunt; a great-grandson, Mason Dillehunt; brothers, Alfred Berry and Ernie Berry (Ella); two nieces; and three nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Thomas Dillehunt and her husband, Robert. A Memorial service will be held 6 p.m. on Monday December 12, 2016, at the New Life Christian Outreach Church in Chester. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the church prior to the service. A Graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery, 1701 Chesapeake Street, Charlottesville, VA, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday December 13, 2016.
