Cornelius Daniel Boyle

Cornelius Daniel Boyle of Chestertown, MD passed away on October 23, 2025. He was 88 years old. Neil was born on April 15, 1937 in Jersey City, NJ, the son of Daniel F. Boyle and Margaret (Raymer) Urban. He grew up on Bayonne, NJ and in 1954, he graduated from Xavier Military High School in Manhattan, NYC. He attended College of Detroit and received a degree in engineering, but soon realized that this was not his life’s chosen path; that the field of medicine was his calling. Neil attended Seton Hall College of Medicine (now Rutger’s) and graduated with his Doctor of Medicine in June 1964. Dr. Boyle then served his country in the United States Navy from 1964-1967, stationed at the Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC. Lt. Commander Boyle enjoyed his time in the Navy, especially his time at sea on a submarine tender where he witnessed (and sometimes participated in) Navy SEALS and Marine training. Upon discharge from the Navy, Neil moved to Maryland to begin his residency in Ophthalmology through the Wilmer Eye Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital. It was during his residency that Dr. Boyle served as a Missionary Doctor in Pakistan, performing 50 or more cataract surgeries a day. Dr. Boyle opened his private practice in ophthalmology in Maryland in 1972. Neil enjoyed sports and physical activity. He loved horseback riding, was an avid skier, and even spent some time boxing in his youth. Spending time with his family was very important to him; traveling to Kansas, Florida, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania to visit his children and grandchildren. Neil was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Chestertown. Along with his parents, Neil was predeceased by his stepfather, John Urban, Sr.; his stepbrothers, Thomas, George, and John; his stepsisters, Adele and Irene; his dear granddaughter, Kristin Herpel; and son-in-law Berry Grant. Neil is survived by his wife Susan; his sons, Daniel (Liz) and Shawn (Tina); daughter, Jennifer Boyle-Grant; and stepsons, Joseph Herpel (Lori) and David Herpel (Laura). He was a loving Pop-Pop/Grandpa to Jessica Boyle (Sam), Matthew Boyle, Devin Boyle, Kaitlyn Boyle, Stephanie Weigel (Garrett), Abigail Herpel, and Caroline Herpel, and loving uncle of John Urban. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church 101 Greenwood Ave Chestertown, MD where relatives and friends may call from 10-11. Interment will be at 3:00 PM at Gardens of Faith Cemetery 5598 Trumps Mill Rd. Baltimore, MD 21206.
