Charles H. Whittum, Jr.

Beloved Charles Harold Whittum, Jr. suffered a fatal stroke and died Sunday, June 6, 2010 at the University Of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. He was 80 years old. “Buck” was born October 30, 1929 in Atlanta, GA to father Charles H. Whittum and mother Margaret Overbey Whittum. He grew up in Wayne, PA (a suburb of Philadelphia) and attended Radnor High School where he played guard for the football team and trumpet in the swing band. After graduating with a Bachelors degree from St. Lawrence University, Mr. Whittum joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served as Company Commander, Amphibious Reconnaissance during the Korean War. He was discharged as Captain in 1953. Early in his professional career, Mr. Whittum attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. His national reputation in commercial lending and real estate finance was well earned throughout his 40 years of banking in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Baltimore. Buck was President of the Robert Morris Association and the local chapter of the Mortgage Bankers Association. He authored numerous banking publications and was a popular speaker at financial conferences. Charles served as a Board member of several corporations and was a licensed Real Estate Broker in PA. He retired as CEO of the Bank of Baltimore, and was most happy living on Maryland’s eastern shore for his last 23 years. Buck’s interest in the community was widespread. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention and the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Corp. He was elected to the Radnor Township School Board and extended his civic duties to the Radnor Municipal Authority. In addition, Mr, Whittum was an active participant in various charitable and non-profit organizations. Although Buck was busy with his career and civic responsibilities, he always found quality time for his family and friends. He loved all kinds of music almost as much as the great outdoors. From his childhood days as a Sea Scout, Buck had been an avid cruising and racing sailor. He enjoyed golf and tennis. His workshop was a place of repose and high quality woodworking. This man was never without something to read – always thinking and eager to learn. Mr. Charles H. Whittum, Jr. is survived by his adoring family – wife of 56 years, Juliana Eastwick, son Cabell, daughter Leslie Wilson, their spouses Georgine and Philip, the grandchildren Cory, Julie, and Eleanor, and his brother John of Steamboat Springs, CO. Truly a man of honor and utmost integrity, Buck is admired and respected by all who knew him. Memorial services will be held in private.
