Calvin Sewell

Calvin “Coolie” Sewell passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Anne Arundel Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was 83 years old. Born on March 4, 1925 to the late James Kersey Sewell and Julia Melvina Young in Grasonville, MD, Mr. Sewell entered the Navy during WWII. He met Virginia Lorraine Dillon before being honorably discharged, and married her on March 4, 1945. They raised their family in the Grasonville-Kent Island area while he worked as a waterman. He also worked in bridge construction; he helped build both the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and refurbish the old Kent Narrows Bridge. He enjoyed hunting rabbits, deer, geese, and ducks. He also enjoyed fishing and watching NASCAR. He was an original founding member and Past Commander of Kent Island American Legion, Post 278. Mr. Sewell is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Sewell; 6 children, Thomas K. Sewell and his wife Lois of Clearwater, FL; John W. Sewell and his wife Tracy of Waldorf, MD; Steve P. Sewell and his wife Winky of Stevensville, MD; Patricia E. Lewis and her husband David of Whaleyville, MD; James K. Sewell and his wife Mindy of Stevensville, MD; and David A. Sewell and his wife Laurie of Centreville, MD; 12 grandchildren, Pam, Kim, Kristin, Jonathan, Miles, Chris, Kelly, Jessica, Zachary, Cameron, Chelsea, and Colin; 6 great grandchildren, Autumn, Abigail, Anisa, Ashlyn, Ramsey, Rylan; and one sister, Lelia Mae Hunter of Grasonville, MD. He is predeceased by his first wife, Virginia Sewell; his brothers, John Sewell, Elwood Sewell, and Elsworth Sewell; and his sisters, Ethel Bennett, Violet Butler, Mary Sparks, Betty Sewell, and Martha Starkey. Family and friends may call on Monday, March 24, 2008 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A., 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, MD 21619. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 11 am at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A., Chester, MD. Interment will follow at Stevensville Cemetery.
