Bertha Lee Copper

Bertha Lee Copper (affectionately known as Mom Bert) of Federalsburg, MD, transitioned on October 12, 2022 to her heavenly home. Bertha was born on October 17, 1938, the daughter of the late George and Mini Rue in Queen Anne’s County, MD. She attended school in Church Hill, MD, and later attended Kitchell College in Virginia. She was a teacher’s aide and alum at Old Kennard High School in Centreville, a teacher at Church Hill Elementary School, and worked at Vita Foods, Campbell Soup, Queen Anne's County Extension Office in Centreville, and later worked at the Kent County Extension Office in Chestertown (4-H Day Camp Leader and Teacher). She retired in 1998. Her hobbies & interests included: church, her family, going to the Senior Center, cooking, and working with 4-H kids. She used to broadcast on the radio on Saturday mornings for the 4-H Program. She was a member of the Word of Life Church in Federalsburg where she was the Church Mother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband (Melvin Copper); two sisters, Mary Douglas, Virginia “Baby Sis” Hoxter; a cousin, Milton Edwards Jr. (Junior); two grandchildren, Shanelle Copper, Tyray Gilbert; and stepson, Melvin Copper II. Bertha is survived by her children, Terry Copper (Zinabeth), Lennell Copper, Sr. (Latasha), Marion “Dorvon” Copper-Felton (Roosevelt), Nathaniel Copper, Sr. (Cathy), Kelvin Copper, Sr. (Pam); a stepson, Chris Copper (Chanelle); a step-daughter, Pattie Copper; her grandchildren: Bertina Joyner, Nathaniel Copper Jr., Kelvin Copper Jr., Bobby Brown, Lennisha Copper, Shatay Copper, John Taylor II, Jamion Copper, Javonte Taylor, Natasha Taylor, Tatayana Copper, Elijah Copper, Lennell Copper Jr., and Kayla Chapman; as well as a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Special nieces and nephews for her were Michelle Brooks, Ronnie Brown, Clifton Wright, and Karen Wright. Bertha enjoyed conversing on the phone for hours with her best friends, Verna Clarkston (son, Kevin) and Jackie Hardin. Services will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, MD. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Sandtown Cemetery, Cemetery Rd. in Hillsboro, MD.
