Alma Louise Lowery

Alma Louise “Piggy” Lowery of Tilghman, MD, died Monday, August 18, 2008, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was 87. Born on July 28, 1921, in Tilghman, the daughter of Warren and Anna Isabel Lowery. As a young woman during WW II, she worked in a factory in Baltimore, Maryland, for the War effort. She was employed for many years at the Tilghman Packing Company until it closed in the 1970s. Alma also worked at Mary McCarty’s grocery store in Tilghman and in the cafeteria at Tilghman Elementary School. She and her mother helped many watermen throughout the years by making sandbags for their fishing nets. Her love for cooking, sewing, and being an all around homemaker made her life fulfilling, but most of all, she dedicated her life to her family, especially her grandnephew and grandniece, Hunter and Haylee Haddaway, and her brother-in-law, John Haddaway. She enjoyed reading, mastering crossword puzzles, playing Bingo, and her favorite TV game show, The Price Is Right. She also had lots of fun with her weekly scratch off lottery tickets. She will be dearly missed by her nephews and nieces, Nelson Lowery of Easton, Doug Lowery of Tilghman, Kathy Frampton of St. Michaels, Colleen Sadler of Sherwood, Darrin Lowery of Easton, Beth Haddaway of Cambridge, and Todd Haddaway of Denton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren Milton Lowery and Anna Isabel Newnam, her siblings, Elmer Lowery, Alice Ann Haddaway and Mildred Lowery; her brother and “best buddy,” Maynard Lowery, died with her. She is also preceded in death by a grandnephew, Philip Sadler. Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, August 25, 2008 at Tilghman United Methodist Church, Tilghman, MD, where friends may visit from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Burial will be at Tilghman Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family will be most grateful for memorial donations made to Tilghman United Methodist Church, PO Box 192, Tilghman, MD 21671; Tilghman Volunteer Fire Company, 5979 Tilghman Island Rd., Tilghman, MD 21671; or Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Dr., Easton, MD 21601. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home P.A., Easton.
