Allen Cunningham

Allen “Al” Cunningham of Sudlersville, passed away on December 16, 2024, in Dover, De. He was 92 years old. Allen was born on July 23, 1932, to Clarence and Elsie Cunningham in Corydon, Indiana, where he spent his childhood. During his high school years, he was an active basketball player and graduated from Corydon High School in 1950. Shortly after graduation, Allen enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from 1951 to 1973. Throughout his military career, he completed five overseas tours, including one in Vietnam, and earned numerous accolades, such as the National Defense Service Medal with Mobilization, Battle Service Star, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Combat “C” devices, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Bronze Star Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After his time in Vietnam, Allen was stationed in Thailand for a year before being assigned to Washington D.C., where he ultimately retired in 1973. Following his retirement, he moved to Sudlersville and constructed his home. Allen was a member of Millington VFW, American Legion and Disable Vets. He was also a USTA Member, and he owned and trained bronze star racehorses. He was preceded in death not only by his parents, Clarence and Elsie Cunningham, but also by his beloved wife, Emma Cunningham, his sister, Goldie Sanders, his brother, Paul Edward Cunningham, his nephew, Jerry Sanders, and friend, Doris Prickett. Allen is survived by one sister, Betty Alice Mathes of Corydon, Indiana, three nieces, Kathy Jo, Michele, and Melody, three nephews Michael, Mark, and Jeffrey. He leaves behind a legacy with his good friends and caregivers, Clara Gravatt of Dover DE, Bill Raynor of Smyrna DE, Lena Hardhrove of Sudlersville and his bar family, and Karen Craft of Sudlersville. A visitation is scheduled for Friday, December 27, from 11 AM to 1 PM at Fellows Family Funeral Home in Millington, MD. This will be followed by a service at 1 PM. After the service, interment will take place at Sudlersville Cemetery.
