Alan Lee Carroll

Alan Lee Carroll, 92, formerly of Chestertown, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home in The Villages, Florida, surrounded by the love of his wife and children. Alan lived a long, rich, and beautiful life—one marked by integrity, unwavering faith, and a quiet humor that brought comfort and joy to those around him. He carried a positive spirit into every season of his life, often with a spark in his eye that showed just how much he enjoyed every moment spent with the people he loved. Above all, Alan was devoted to his family, who remained the center of his world. Born in Easton, Maryland on October 20, 1933, Alan was the son of the late Robert James Carroll and Alma Granger Carroll, and the brother of the late Patricia Crew. He grew up on the Eastern Shore, attended Chestertown High School, and continued his studies at Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware. He served his country in the United States Army Signal Corps as a cryptographer—an experience he enjoyed and was proud of. On December 22, 1954, he married Ruth K. Kullmann. Together, they spent the first 18 months of their married life in France and shared many adventures traveling throughout Europe before returning home to Chestertown to build their life and family. In 1962, Alan joined the family business, Park Cleaners. As president, he relocated the dry-cleaning and laundry operation to Chestertown, while keeping the Kingstown location for rug cleaning. His work was more than a job—it was a source of pride. He was always looking for ways to improve, expand, and innovate. In 1968, he added floor coverings to the business and later moved that division back to Kingstown after selling the dry-cleaning side to Admiral Cleaners of Annapolis. The legacy he built continued through the next generation when his grandson, Bob Schauber, purchased the Kingstown operation, now Chesapeake Family Flooring. Alan retired in 2004 at the age of 70, beginning a new chapter of life in The Villages, Florida. Alan’s commitment to his community and faith was deep and enduring. He served with dedication in many civic and service organizations, including as Director of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce; Vice President of the Kent County Savings and Loan for 20 years; President of the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company; and a proud member of the Lions Club for over 50 years. His service also included the Masonic Lodge #115, the Frank M. Jarman American Legion, and 11 years on the Board of Directors for Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital, where he spent two years as Chairman. Alan’s personal life was shaped by love and partnership. After 60 years of marriage, Ruth passed away in 2014. In time, Alan found companionship again with Penelope “Penny” Johnson, with whom he shared joyful years of travel and friendship until her passing in May 2020. On December 14, 2024, Alan married Cedalia Shute, and together they created a precious season of life filled with music, laughter, faith, and the comfort of dear friends. Alan leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory. He is survived by his three children: Michelle “Mickey” Roderick, Teresa Schauber (Ron), and David Carroll; twelve grandchildren: Patrick Roderick (Leeann), Clint Roderick (Kelsey), Jimmy Roderick (Lydia), Bob Schauber (Brandy), Erica Maier (Eric), Carla Schauber, Jane Rones (Adam), Nicole Giasner, Zachary Carroll (Caity), Nicholas Carroll, Blade Carroll, and Logan Carroll; and nineteen great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his niece, Julie Athey (Ron), and their children: Charlie (Monica), Eddie, and Trish (Eric). A graveside service in honor of Alan’s life will be held at Saint Paul’s Cemetery in Chestertown on July 15th at 11 AM.
