Margaret Scott Norton-Taylor

Margaret Scott Norton-Taylor died on Saturday, September 28, 2002, at her home in Oxford. She was 94. Born in Norwich, CT, on May 3, 1908, she was the daughter of the late William and Lillian Peckham Scott. She graduated from Classical High School in Providence, RI, and after her marriage to Duncan Norton-Taylor in 1926, moved to New Jersey where her three daughters were born. In 1931, they built a home on Town Creek in Oxford and lived there for a few years before moving back to New Jersey in 1939. Her husband joined the editorial staff of Time Magazine and they subsequently moved to New York City until his retirement in 1967 when they moved back to Oxford. Mr. Norton-Taylor died in September 1982. While living in New Jersey, Mrs. Norton-Taylor spent many years as a Girl Scout leader and after moving to New York, volunteered for the American Red Cross. She was an active member of St. George’s Episcopal Church, and avid lover of the arts, attending many concerts, theater, opera, art exhibits, etc. She studied piano and photography, traveled extensively with her husband, including trips to Europe, Great Britain, Japan, China, Thailand, Bermuda and the Caribbean, and faithfully documented these many trips on film. She also enjoyed bike riding and made several hostel trips with her sister. After returning to Oxford in 1967, she spent many hours as a volunteer at the Oxford Museum, the Customs House, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Oxford Fire Dept. and the Episcopal Church Women of Holy Trinity Church where she was a member of the congregation and the choir. She also sang with the Easton Choral Arts Society for several years. One of her great loves was photography. She was a member of the Academy Art Museum and the Camera Club in Easton and often won awards for her photos. She loved sewing, cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening and her two Yorkies. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed. Mrs. Norton-Taylor is survived by three daughters, Nancy Norton-Taylor Tomson of Preston and twins Joan Norton-Taylor Seyler and Susan Norton-Taylor May both of Oxford; a sister, Eleanor Gowan of Washington Depot, CT; nine grandchildren, Ellen Tomson Moylan, Patricia Laudati, Elizabeth Ennis, Jennifer Emslie, Kristine Thorn, Joan May, Nat May, John May and Ned May; one nephew, Donald Gowan; two nieces, Maggie Webster and Ann Lord; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear friend and caregiver, Stephanie Beasley of Cambridge. A grandson, Duncan May, died in 1968. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 4, 2002, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Cathedral, Easton. Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, MD.
