Dr. Lawrence William Menapace

Dr. Lawrence W. Menapace (Larry) of Centreville, MD formerly of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2013 of Acute Myloid Leukemia. He was 76. Born April 13, 2013 in 1937 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Angelo and Rose (Chanenchuk) Menapace. Larry graduated from St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn, NY, St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ in 1960 and received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of New Hampshire in 1964 and was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1963. On June 11, 1960 Larry married Eileen Mullan in Brooklyn, NY. Larry was a professor of organic chemistry at Marist College in Poughkeepsie for 43 years where he was a great teacher and mentor to many of his students and basketball players who often kept in touch with him after graduation. Larry was a member of the American Chemical Society, Institute of Society, Ethics and Life Sciences, National Assn. of Basketball Coaches, National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Assn, New York State Basketball Coaches Assn, received the Marist College Community Service Award in 1982, Dutchess County Mental Health Advisory Board 1978-1980, Rep. Hamilton Fish’s Conservation Task Force, 1973-1978, Conservation Advisory Commission (Chairperson) of Town of Poughkeepsie, NY 1972-76, Cub Scout Council Chairperson, Pack 67, 1972, Environmental Advisory Committee, City of Poughkeepsie 1971, C.Y.O. and Little League Coaching. Larry coached boys basketball at Roy C. Ketcham High School from 1989-1995; Rhinecliff High School boys basketball coach 1986-1987; Marist College assistant men’s basketball coach 1985-86; Marist College academic advisor for men’s basketball team 1979-86; Mt. St. Mary’s; Women’s basketball coach 1984-85; Arlington High school coach freshmen girls basketball 1983-84; Marist College assistant men’s basketball coach 1979-83; Marist College J.V. men’s basketball coach 1972-74 and Marist College Assistant men’s basketball coach 1971-72. Larry and his wife Eileen loved to travel and enjoyed visiting so many exciting places all over the world, loved their annual vacation in Barbados, along with the many cruises they have sailed on. He is survived by his daughter Barbara LaPilusa and her husband John of Mt. Airy, MD and his son James Menapace and his wife Therese Woods of Chestertown, MD; a brother John Menapace and wife Marian of Lake Ariel, PA and brother Joseph Menapace and wife Marie of Bayside, NY, grandchildren Jack, Chase and Sam LaPilusa of Mt. Airy, MD and Thomas, Christina and Mary Menapace of Chestertown, MD. He was predeceased by his parents and son John Lawrence. A visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Monday, November 4, 2013 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, MD. A funeral Mass a 9:30 AM on Thursday, November 7 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Mill Street and burial will follow the service at St, Joseph’s Cemetery all in Poughkeepsie, NY.
