John A. Grant M.D.%2CMPH

John A. Grant, M.D., M.P.H. of Chestertown, MD died on April 12, 2004 at Chester River Hospital Center in Chestertown, MD. He was 71. Born in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Albert Mathias and Mary Adams Grant. Dr. Grant was educated at Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, PA. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Gettysburg College in 1953, a Medical Degree from University of Pennsylvania in 1957, and served an internship at Church Home and Hospital in Baltimore, MD and completed a pediatrics residency at University of Maryland Hospital in 1962. He was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in 1963 and received a Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University in 1969. He was engaged in the private practice of Pediatrics in his hometown of Hanover, PA from 1962 until 1967. During that time he served as Pediatric Consultant to the Learning Disabilities Clinic at the University of Maryland Hospital. Following his interest in developmental pediatrics, Dr. Grant moved to Baltimore and became Chief of School Health Section, Division of Maternal and Child Health, Maryland State Department of Health until 1970 when he joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. During that time he was the Deputy Director of the Community Pediatric Center and was also an Associate in the Department of Population and Family Health of the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. There he published articles in the fields of adolescent rape and pregnancy, child health screening, and program evaluation. In the early 1970’s Dr. Grant eschewed teaching and research for public health service and moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland where he has been Health Officer for Kent County since 1972 and Caroline County since 1979. He retired in December of 2003. Dr. Grant has received National and Regional recognition for innovative programs and initiatives. He enjoyed fish carving, collecting trains, traveling, fishing, hunting, and was a WWI Historian. In addition to his wife, the former Betty Ann Holliday, he is survived by two sons, Albert Cadwell Grant of California and Allen Cadwell Grant of Louisiana; a brother, William Adams Grant of Hawaii and two grandsons, Alexander Lane Grant and John Edward Grant, both of California.
