Jean Smith

Jean Marshall Smith of Heron Point, Chestertown, MD, died unexpectedly on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the Chester River Hospital Center in Chestertown, MD. She was 95. Jean M. Smith was born November 7, 1913, in Medford, MA, and was raised in nearby Reading. She attended Tufts University where she developed her lifelong love of literature, art, and poetry. The daughter of the late Douglas Marshall and Alice Bennett Marshall, Mrs. Smith led an active life caring for her home and family. Prior to moving to Chestertown in 1985, Jean and her late husband, Olin P. Smith, resided in Newtown Square, PA, for 30 years. There, Jean was a member of Old St. David’s Episcopal Church, an avid gardener, a wonderful bridge player, and an active member of the League of Women Voters of Delaware County, PA. She also enjoyed traveling; playing golf and tennis; and participating in weekly oil painting sessions with noted Philadelphia artist Katherine Fussell. As one of the original residents, Jean truly enjoyed living at Heron Point. During her 18 years there, she helped set up the lending library; served on the Resident Council; worked to maintain the Health Care gardens; played bridge regularly; led prospective residents on tours of Heron Point; helped organize Art Shows; and attended continuing education courses through the Academy of Life-long Learning. Jean was also a member of the local Garden Club, the Questers, and Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chestertown. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Smith; son-in-law, Ian Littman, of Chestertown and Kensington, MD; as well as three grandchildren, Andrew B. Littman of Vienna, VA ,and Laura M. Littman and Ethan C. Littman of Chestertown and Kensington, MD. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chestertown. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery in Chestertown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Chester River Homecare and Hospice, 6602 Church Hill Rd, Suite 300, Chestertown, MD 21620. Alternatively, donations may be made to the Community Food Bank (checks may be submitted to Emmanuel Church with the notation “for the Community Food Bank”) or to the Humane Society of Kent County.
