Jean Robinson Child

Jean Robinson Child of St. Michaels, MD, died peacefully Wednesday night at the age 84 after a brief illness. She was born and grew up in the Town of Winchester, VA, and attended Handley High School during World War II. She attended Stephens College in Missouri for two years before completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics from the University of Maryland in 1950. She joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority where she developed friendships that lasted the rest of her life. There she met her future husband, Godfrey Byrd Child, and they were married in 1951. They had a son in 1952, Godfrey, and a daughter, Susan, in 1954. In 1957, they moved to Frederick, MD. While in Frederick, Jean got what would be the first of six Siamese and Tonkinese cats. A year later they moved to Towson, MD, before moving once again to Timonium in 1959. Jean worked for several years in retail sales before beginning a career as a travel agent. Over the next seventeen years she and her husband Godfrey traveled the world over. Her favorite trips were cruises and tours such as Abercrombie and Kent. She worked and obtained her CTC certification for professional purposes. She was a member of the Virginia Women of Maryland and the Towson Presbyterian Church. Jean and Godfrey bought a run-down home on the Eastern shore as a summer home in the village of Wittman, MD, that the family fixed up over a period of years. In 1992, they sold the house in Wittman and in Timonium, retired and bought their final house in St. Michaels, which they both loved. Godfrey died in 1994, and Jean began a new phase of her life. She worked for many years as a docent in the lighthouse at the St. Michaels Maritime Museum educating tourists about its history and function. She played bridge, began to read non-stop, and gardened. She loved musicals, old movies, and music from the 1940’s. She became a member of the Easton Presbyterian Church. Jean loved the changing seasons and the migration of waterfowl over the Chesapeake Bay. With a yard full of Canadian Geese, she would always quip she was glad to see them come in October and glad to see them leave in March. In 2011, with health problems, she began residency at William Hill Manor where she still played bridge and continued to read. She is survived by a son, Godfrey; a daughter, Susan; a sister, Dorothy Ann Robinson of Winchester, VA; and one very beloved cat. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday. October 2, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Oxford Cemetery in Oxford. MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Talbot County Free Library, 100 West Dover St., Easton, MD 21601 .
