Dorothy Stevenson

Dorothy Kelly Stevenson of St. Michaels, MD, passed away peacefully at Candlelight Cove on December 25, 2016. She was 85. Born in Hackensack, NJ, on July 12, 1931, she was the daughter of the late George T. Kelly and Anna Marie Lanmaack Kelly. She attended Holy Trinity in Hackensack and St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, NJ, before attending Fashion School in New York, where she also worked as a fashion model for two years. On June 23, 1951, she married John D. Stevenson, and the couple made their home in Oakland, NJ, where they raised their four children. After retirement, the Stevensons made their home in St. Michaels, MD, and Mrs. Stevenson joined the St. Michaels Mission Church and became a dedicated volunteer at the Chesapeake Maritime Museum, where she was the recording secretary for nine years. Mrs. Stevenson loved to play her piano. She was an avid traveler, taking many weekend trips to various bed and breakfasts as well as to the New Jersey beaches in the summer. She also enjoyed reading books by John Grisham and Tom Clancy, completing crossword puzzles, and watching movies, a hobby that reminded her of her father, who worked for Warner Brothers. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially watching her children’s sports and dance activities, as well as with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband, John D. Stevenson; her children, John D. Stevenson, III and his wife, Catherine, Patty Garrison, Tim Stevenson and his wife, Lori, and Chris Stevenson and his wife, Michelle; a sister, Mary Catherine Shea and her husband, Frank; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Leona McLaughlin. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 29 from 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Easton, MD. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 30 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Easton, MD. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Cordova, MD.
