Wm. Dave McIntire

W. David McIntire of Chestertown, MD, died peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2013, at Safe Haven Manor in Sudlersville, MD. Dave was born on April 21, 1925, in Media, Pennsylvania, the son of the late William McIntire and Martha Collins. He was a long time resident of Swarthmore, PA, moving to Chestertown after his retirement in 1986. After graduation from Swarthmore High School, Dave attended Pennsylvania Maritime Academy where he was commissioned in the United State Merchant Marines. During World War II, he made several convoy trips to the Mediterranean as a merchant mariner and then transferred to active duty in the United States Navy, serving on destroyers in the South Pacific. Dave maintained, until the end of life, that nothing had given him more pride than his service to the country during that period. He was truly one of the “greatest generation.” He left the Navy in 1947 to attend Temple University, graduating in 1951, and then joined Catalytic Construction Company working there as Vice President of Labor Relations and Safety until his retirement. Dave was also a lifetime member of the Swarthmore Fire Company. A lifelong sailor, Dave spent hours on the water, cruising the Chesapeake Bay and the New England coast, sailing to Maine with his wife, Kelley, aboard his beloved “WAWA.” He was a board member of the Chester River Yacht and Country Club and a Commodore for two years. He was also a founding member of the Davis Creek Yacht Club. Dave believed in giving back to his community and served on the Chester Rive Hospital Foundation Board with a particular commitment to the Chester River Manor. A member of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce and its president for two years, he was also foreman of the Queen Anne’s County Grand Jury, whose recommendations led to the formation of the County’s Alcohol and Drug Commission. He was a participant in the Chestertown 300 Committee, co-chairing the parade that marked the close of the Town’s celebration of its 300-year history. A member of the Chestertown Lions Club, he proudly wore his “Curmudgeon” name tag. Dave is survived by his wife, Kelley; daughters, Kathleen Cole (Brian) of Chester Heights, PA, and Barbara Tibbetts ( Douglas) of Wilmington, DE; a son, Scott McIntire (Jill) of Portland, OR; and five much-loved grandchildren, Anderson Bowes, Paige Tibbetts, Will Tibbetts, Quinn McIntire, and Sean McIntire. A celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Thursday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. at the Chester River Yacht and Country Club. His family invites all Dave’s friends to join them in raising a toast to a life fully lived. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
