Winona Wagner

Winona Darley Wagner died June 3, 2013, at Heartfields in Easton, MD, from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was 92. Born in McLeansboro, IL, on May 31, 1921, she was the second of four children to Wattie and Lillon Darley. She was married in 1942 at Las Cruces, NM, while her husband was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. She moved with her husband to Salisbury, MD, in 1945 at the end of World War II. The family subsequently settled in Pocomoke City where they resided until 1962 before moving to Easton. Throughout the 68 years they resided in Maryland, Mr. and Mrs. Wagner had many close friends and lived an active social life. Winona was an avid bridge player and belonged to many different bridge groups. She worked for many years for Pensel & Walker Optometry as office manager and was a volunteer at the Memorial Hospital at Easton in the Commission Shop. She and her husband were longtime members of the Easton Elks Lodge, and they greatly enjoyed evenings spent dining and dancing. Mrs. Wagner was a member Sts. Peter and Paul Parish and three of her children attended and graduated from Sts. Peter and Paul School. Her children recognize and will always cherish the special person they had for a mother and will treasure the love and dedication she tirelessly gave to assure their care and well-being. Mrs. Wagner is survived by four children, David Wagner of Annapolis, Cheryl Baynard of Savannah, GA, Gail Carroll of Dunkirk, MD, and Jeffrey Wagner of Easton. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, David W. Wagner, who died in 2007. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2013, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton. Friends may call Friday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton. Burial will be at Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD.
