Wilmer Butler Edgell Sr.

Wilmer Butler Edgell, Sr., of Easton, a prominent banker whose career spanned more than half a century, died of heart failure on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at the Wm. Hill Health Care Center, Easton. He was 94. Born in Baltimore City, June 30, 1910, he was the son of the late Clarence R. and Lula Edgell. He was reared on the Eastern Shore and graduated from Easton High School where he and his older brother constituted the school’s golf and tennis team. Mr. Edgell and his brother, Sherman, inherited their grandfather’s specialty market in Easton that they renamed, Edgell Brothers. On doctor’s orders, he and his family moved to Arizona in 1947 where he developed an abiding interest in Western and Indian art. After returning to Easton in 1951, he became affiliated with the Talbot Bank, where he oversaw the daily operations of the institution until his retirement in 1978. A member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Easton and Miller Lodge #18, I.O.O.F., he, as a member of the Talbot Country Club, won his first golf tournament in 1939 and his love of the game continued all of his life. He served on numerous boards including the Chesapeake Rehabilitation Center and the YMCA of Talbot County. Mr. Edgell had a zest for life. He was a golfer, bowler, sailor, poetry writer, art collector, philanthropist and adventurer. He was a gentleman. His wife, the former Margaret A. Legg whom he married April 8, 1935, died January 18, 1995. Mr. Edgell is survived by a daughter, Diane E. Shortall and her husband, Dr. Charles Shortall of Lutherville, MD; a son, W. B. Edgell, Jr. and his wife Beverly C. Edgell, of Bethesda, MD; a sister, Lois A. Edgell of DeLand, FL; two grandchildren, Megan Kenny and her husband, Edward and Colin Edgell and his wife, Jennifer and three great-grandchildren, Charlie and Pippin Kenny and Gardner P. Edgell. Funeral services will be held at the graveside at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, MD on Saturday, November 6th, at 3 P.M. Memorial donations may be made to Hog Neck Golf Course Junior Golf, 10142 Old Cordova, Road, Easton, MD 21601.
