William Sudler Goodhand Jr.

William Sudler “Sus” Goodhand Jr. of Sudlersville, MD died Monday, March 3, 2003 in the William Hill Manor,Easton, MD of heart failure. He was 79. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late William Sudler and Margaret Nelson Goodhand. He was a sales representative for the Chesapeake Supply and Equipment CO. of Baltimore, MD, retiring in 1985. During World War II he was a veteran P-51 fighter pilot and continued his military service as a member of the National Guard for 18 years. Mr. “Sus”, as he was affectionately known, was very active in the community of Sudlersville where he served as a Town Commissioner and made several significant contributions to the community. His favorite projects were the introduction of computers and on-line services to the community library, The Jimmy Foxx memorial and the addition of the new town sewer system. His enthusiastic involvement along with many of the citizens of Sudlersville, made these dreams come alive. Mr. Goodhand had many loves in his life but working with youth always stood at the top of his list. Having both his sons attend our service academies and a daughter teaching elementary school shows that the need to guide our young people was very important to him. In 1975 he coached the undefeated Berkley Sq. Bobcats in football. He also enjoyed teaching children how to sail and later in life volunteered regularly at the Sudlersville Elementary school. But his true love was the game of Lacrosse. In 1977 he founded the Sudlersville Youth Lacrosse program and through the past 25 plus years, nearly 2000 young men and ladies have been tutored and coached to love the game. Through his dedication and hard work Mr. Goodhand has been recognized by the United States Lacrosse Foundation as a National Award Winner for his contribution to the game of Lacrosse. He was a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Sudlersville, MD, the American Legion Post #192, Millington, MD and the Sudlersville Lions Club. Mr. Goodhand is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Jane “Susie” Goodhand; two sons, Williamm S. “Rick” Goodhand of Arnold MD and George Mason Goodhand of Sandy UT;, four grandsons, Adrian J. Goodhand, Mason S.Goodhand, John A. Goodhand and Patrick B. Hibbard; and two granddaughters, Courtney Anne Hibbard and Megan A.Goodhand. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 7, 2003 at 11:00 in the St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Sudlersville, MD. Friends and family may call Thursday evening from 6-8pm at the Fellows Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, MD. Interment will follow services in the Sudlersville Cemetery, Sudlersville, MD.
