William Stanley Sutton

William Stanley Sutton of Chestertown, MD passed away on Thursday, Feb 15, 2024 at Compass Regional Hospice in Centreville, MD. He was 90. “Bill” was born Aug 21, 1933 in Chestertown, MD during a hurricane. He was the son of the late Stanley B. and Helen Shriley Sutton. He was a 1951 graduate of Chestertown High School and was in the first class to graduate under the 12 year program. Bill was a lifetime resident of Chestertown and lived in the same house his entire life. In 1956 he married the late Ann Walls and started a family together. Bill spent his life working as a dairy farmer continuing the family business and was very involved in the agricultural industry as well as being a very active member of his community. In 1951 he received the National 4-H Dairy Award and the following year received the National 4-H Soil Conservation Award. In the late 60’s he was the 4-H All Star Big Chief. In 1962 he was the Supervisor of the Kent Soil Conservation District for 28 years and served as the president for 25 years. From 1977-1979 he was President of the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts and also served as President of the Chestertown Cotillion Club where he and Ann were members for 43 years. In 1980 he was inducted in the Pennsylvania Master Farmer Association. Bill served as a Kent County Commissioner from 1990-1994 and was also Chairman of the Maryland Eastern Shore RC&D Association. From 1995-2023 he was a member of Kent County Planning and Zoning and was recently acknowledged with a certificate of Appreciation for 29 years of service to the county. In 1996 he was inducted into the Maryland Agricultural Hall of Fame. He was a lifetime member of the Maryland Holstein Association and remained a Board Member of Upper Shore Aging until the time of his passing. Bill was also a Lifelong member of St. James United Methodist Church where he served on numerous committees. Bill’s family, farm, and community were his life. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his step mother, Edna Marie Hubbard Sutton, sisters in law, Fay Miller, Peggy Clark, and Pat Walls, and four brothers in law, Bud Walls, Raymond Walls, Edward Walters and Tommy Clark. He is survived by his son, William S. “Billy” Sutton Jr. and daughter in law Patricia, his daughter, Susan Sutton Nickerson and son in law Phillip, four grandchildren, William S. Sutton III (Lacey), Jessica Strong (Ray), Tanner Nickerson, Baxter Nickerson, ten great grandchildren, Drew, Bevyn, Braelynn, Bristol, Bailey, Lucy, Reese, Rachel, Henry and Rhett, sister in law, Edwina Walls Walters, step brother, Dr. Wilkins Hubbard and many nieces, nephews and cousins who were very special to him. A visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb 22, 2024 from 3-5pm and 6-8pm at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd Chestertown, MD. Services will be held on Friday, Feb 23, 2024 at 10am at St. James United Methodist Church in Worton, MD, where friends and family may visit one hour prior to the service (9:00 am - 10:00 am). Interment will follow the service in St. James Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to St. James United Methodist Church P.O.
