William Miller

William C. Miller (Bill) died at The Gardens at William Hill in Easton, MD, on the early morning of Saturday, March 31, 2012, just three months after the death of his wife of 52 years, Irma Miller. Born in Baltimore, MD on January 9, 1937, he was the son of Calvin and Catherine Miller. Bill graduated from Arundel High School in Gambrills, MD, where he was a three sport letter winner. He also attended the Maryland Art Institute and graduated from Washington College in the Class of 1959. As an English Major at Washington College, Bill wrote sports articles for the School paper that were often published in the Baltimore Sun and sent to the AP wire. He met his wife, Irma McMahan Miller, in Chestertown at “WC.” They were married in Easton at Christ Episcopal Church on September 20, 1959. Bill was an Owner and President of McMahan Oil Company in Easton for forty plus years. Prior to running the oil business, he worked for Moore Business Forms in Virginia. Bill ran McMahan Oil Company for most of his working career. He thought of his employees as family and was rewarded by having many long-term employees, friends, and customers at the company during his many years at the helm and after. Bill was the proud father of three sons, Michael, Brian, and Tim. He was involved with many youth sports in Talbot County, including Easton Little League, the Talbot Football League, and the “Pony League” for these sports. Bill served as President of the T.F.L. and Easton Little League, while coaching many teams along the way. Bill was an umpire and referee around Talbot County for 25 years. Known as the “Voice of the Warriors,” Bill broadcast football, basketball and baseball games for the local radio station WEMD and then WCEI, with a variety of partners, including his cousin and close friend, Joe Melchior. Bill was a Past President and member of the Easton Rotary Club, the President of the United Fund, and he proudly served on the Memorial Hospital Board. He was the chairman of the Shore Health Land Development Corporation, which helped layout and plan the Idlewild medical corridor. In addition, he served as President of the Maryland National Bank Board. Bill also served in many capacities at Washington College, including on their Board of Visitors and Governors. He was a long time member of the Easton Elks Club and the Easton Club. He was a founding member of the Washington Street Pub, where his love of seafood and oysters were the inspiration for the Raw Bar that exists today. He was a very generous and kind-hearted man, who was always willing to help a friend in need, whether it was while enjoying a fireside chat and a drink or something more. He enjoyed everything that Talbot County and the Eastern Shore had to offer and he especially appreciated the color and characters of this unique region. He loved to play golf, boat in Talbot County, relax on the beach and return to Virginia to explore historic civil war battlegrounds. Bill is survived by a sister, Nancy Jacobs; two sons, Michael Miller and his wife, Julia, and Timothy Miller and his wife, Amy; and five grandchildren: Erin, Brian, Jack, Caroline and Timmy Jr. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Irma McMahan Miller on 12/17/11, and his son, Brian Keith Miller on 11/7/82. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that charitable contributions be made to Easton Little League, P.O. 1655, Easton MD 21601 or Talbot Lacrosse Association, P.O. 2014, Easton MD 21601 A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, April 28, from 3 – 5 p.m. at The Talbot County Club. Friends and family are encouraged to attend.
