William Alexander "Billbo" Jones Sr.

William Alexander Jones, Sr., affectionately known as “Billbo,” departed this life peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at his home in Coleman’s, Maryland, with his devoted son and caregiver by his side. He was born on November 17, 1943, in Coleman’s, Maryland, the ninth of fifteen children born to the late Reuben M. and Addie M. Jones. Billbo was educated in the Kent County Public School System and graduated with the Class of 1961 from Henry Highland Garnet High School. Shortly after graduation, he joined his brothers in working with Laborers' Union Local 199. Over the course of 50 dedicated years, Billbo held many positions within the union, earning the respect of his colleagues through his strong work ethic and commitment. At an early age, Billbo joined Union at Coleman Corner United Methodist Church. A faithful and active member, he served as Trustee, usher, sang on the Men’s Choir, and worked diligently on the Administrative Council and Kitchen Committee. He was especially known for his delicious fried fish and could often be found at Coleman’s Day celebrations, family gatherings, and catering events alongside his friend Asbury, sharing both food and fellowship. Billbo had a deep love for the outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, or tending to his garden, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures, which could also include a game or two of pinochle. In the same vein showing pride to his roots he also hosted the largest community event, Coleman’s Day. Bringing family and friends together showing his love for his community. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family. Of all the titles he held throughout his life, “Pop Pop” was his greatest joy, especially when it came to his great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and fourteen siblings, Billbo was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Shirley E. Jones; his daughter, Bonita Cooper; and a son, Durand Jones. His legacy of love, faith, hard work, and devotion to family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. To cherish Billbo’s memory are two sons: William A. Jones, Jr. (Alberta) of Worton, Maryland, and Marvin Scott of Chestertown, Maryland; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild on the way. Two sisters Faye Little and Cynthia Oakley both of Worton MD. His best friend and cousin Marvin Jones Sr. And a special cousin that was more like a niece, Darlene Stouts. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 12:00 pm at Mt. Olive AME Church. A viewing will be held two hours prior, from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at the church. Interment to follow at Union UMC Cemetery.
