William George

William Francis George of Worton, MD died on February 21, 2003 at Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital in Chestertown, MD. He was 89. Born in Easton, Maryland on April 13, 1913, he was the son of the late Julius and Rosetta Bigger George. His wife, the late Louise Cheezum George predeceased him in 1994. Mr. George was a 1929 graduate of Easton High School in Easton, Maryland and while working in Baltimore, after graduation, as a blueprint expert for Glenn L. Martin Company, he attended Polytechnic Institute for 2 years excelling in mathematics. During World War II he was recruited by the Easton National Guard to help protect Easton from enemy forces. He worked with the Kunkel Service Company in Chestertown for 29 years and retired in 1974. After retirement he and his wife opened an antique shop in Kingstown called the “Busy Bee”. In the 1980’s he opened a bike shop in Kennedyville, MD where he sold and repaired all makes of bicycles. Mr. George was known for his expertise in opening locks and safes and was kept busy in three counties unlocking file cabinets, changing safe combinations and opening locked car doors. He and his wife with their family enjoyed going out on his boat for weekends with the “Chestertown Cruising Club”. Mr. George enjoyed performing magic, a passion that began at a young age to the delight of his family and friends. In later years as a prestidigitator he often performed magic shows for Boy Scouts, Lions Clubs, and other various service organizations in the area. He also played several musical instruments but his favorites were the banjo and guitar. His band performed in the Easton area in the 1930’s. Mr. George was issued a life member award for his many years serving as a volunteer with the Kennedyville Fire Department. He also served as commodore of the 5th District United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and was Flotilla 44’s “Auxiliarist of the Year” in 1969. He is survived by two daughters: Shirley Held of Worton, Md. and Lola Price of Still Pond, Md., two brothers: Lloyd George of Easton, Md. and Robert George of Cambridge, Md., two sisters: Alice Harrison of Easton, Md. and Rosalie Sharp of Rehoboth, Delaware. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2003 at 12:30 at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Road Chestertown, Md. where relatives and friends may call one-half hour prior to the service (12:00-12:30).
