William F. Blyman Jr.

William Franklin Blyman, Jr. of Worton died alone on January 26, 2021 in a Covid hospital, not surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was only 66. Bill was born on September 11, 1954 in Chestertown, Maryland, the son of the late William F. Blyman Sr. and Mary C. Plummer Blyman. As a young boy, Bill started working at Western Auto putting bicycles together. He worked a variety of jobs before settling into the shop at the State Highway Administration where he retired after 30 years as Shop Chief. Bill was a wonderful husband, dad, brother, and friend, but he was the greatest grandfather. Bill spent countless hours with his grandkids, who called him Bugdad, in “the camp” whether they were actually camping, or just parked in the driveway. He taught them so much in their time together, but most of all he was their best friend. Bill, Billy, Mr. Bill, Uncle Bill, Bly, Big Head, Bugdad was an easy man to love. He had a quiet laugh and a sweet smile that made him friends in all sizes. Everyone from the kids in Mindy’s daycare who would jockey for a spot on his lap to watch the news, to the strangers he met in line at the store - everyone considered Bill their friend. Bill was always prepared and he could fix or build just about anything. He always kept a good fly swatter close, was never without a pen and paper in his pocket, kept a million parts to a million different things in case anyone might ever need it, and traveled with crackers and a bottle of water - just in case. Bill was ready for anything and he was always, ALWAYS, there when you needed him. Bill enjoyed gardening, camping, the pursuit of a perfect lawn, playing pitch (he never paid attention but always had the card that would set you), a cold Diet Coke, a motorcycle ride on a sunny day, a good train show, and a perfect day on the beach, but most of all he loved being with family, especially his three grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Melinda S. Herr Blyman, his son Brent,very special daughter-in-law Julie, and his three much loved grandchildren Adele, Oliver, and Gardner who loved their Bugdad very much. Bill is also survived by his three brothers, James Blyman, Mark Blyman, and David Blyman (Stefanie) all of Worton, and his sister Sheila Dlugaborski of Lynch, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bill’s life will be celebrated in the future when it is safe to do so. This is a terrible virus that has taken far too many, too soon. Wear a mask and keep social distance, even with family who live outside your home, stay away from groups of people, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, and get vaccinated when you can. We have learned the hardest way that you cannot be too careful. Think of Bill when you crack open an ice cold Diet Coke, or reach for a piece of paper and pen in your car’s console. Think of him when you are able to hug your grandchildren again. His smile was contagious and generous, his warmth genuine. He will be forever missed.
