Thomas W. Sappington Sr.

Thomas Wesley Sappington, Sr. of Stevensville, MD, formerly of Elvaton, MD, died Friday, October 22, 2004 at his home. He was 79. Born on March 31, 1925 in Severn, MD, he was the son of the late Velma and Orem Sappington. Thomas served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. When he returned from WWII, he began working for Pennsylvania Railroad - Bethlehem Steel Shipyard for a brief period. He then began working for Davison Chemical Company in Curtis Bay in Baltimore City. He was promoted to the research center in Columbia, MD. He retired as a research technician in 1987 with 38 years of service. On August 22, 1947, he married Inez L. Hebler of Baltimore and they raised their family in Elvaton, MD and only recently moved to Stevensville, MD. He was a past member of the Glen Burnie Masonic Lodge #213 A.F. and A.M. and Kent Island American Legion Post 278 in Stevensville. He was also a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Elvaton, MD where he was a Sunday School Superintendent and was part of the church choir. In addition to his wife Inez, he is survived by his two children, Peggy Ridgley of Stevensville, MD and Thomas Wesley Sappington, Jr. of Ridgely, MD; one brother, Newton Sappington of Hanover, MD; four sisters, Velma Wiseman of White Marsh, MD, Rachael Sann of Brooklyn, MD, Edna Caulfield of Glen Burnie, MD and Martha Martinson of Pine City, MN; two foster brothers, Lawrence Shifflett of Glen Burnie and Norman Shifflett of Brooklyn, MD; one foster sister, Catherine Wentworth of Pottstown, PA; six grandchildren, Carol Ann Borradaile of Centreville, MD, Tammi Magruder of Naples, FL, Ben Ridgley, III of Stevensville, MD, Staci Yardim, Pamela Mullins and Cassie Sappington of Ridgely, MD; eleven great grandchildren, Brandon, Jesse and Andrew Borradaile of Centreville, MD, Chelsea Ridgley of Stevensville, MD, Haleigh Magruder of Naples, FL, Aydin Yardim, Kendal Ringgold, Olivia Mullins and Ty Mullins of Ridgely, MD, Mack and Grace Magruder of Wye Mills, MD. He was predeceased by a brother, Orval Sappington. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 25, 2004 at 11AM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A., Chester, MD. Family and friends may call on Sunday, October 24, 2004 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM. Interment will follow in Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.
