Susan Lynne Roe

Mrs. Susan L. Roe (Gates), age 73, of Reliance, passed away Monday evening, September 15, 2025, at her residence. The family was deeply saddened and shocked by her sudden death. She was born in Talbot County on December 14, 1951, as the daughter of the late Jesse and Etta (Sewell) Miller, and the sister of the late Michael Miller. Susan graduated from St. Michael's High School. After graduation she spent many years working on the water with her husband Norman, until his death in 1990. Later in her life she met and married her second husband, Michael W Gates. Susan and Mike had two very special “children”, their beloved Dachshund’s Hanna and Sara. She was the matriarch of her family, who she loved dearly, and enjoyed spending time with them. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and lived a life full of love. Her memory will remain a blessing to them all. Her passing has left a huge void in the hearts of her family and friends, who will truly miss her forever. She loved nothing better than curling up on the couch with a cup of black coffee, while watching her ghost shows or the Price is Right. She would also spend her spare time scrolling through Tiktok or Facebook and watching videos, which she willingly shared with her family. Her favorite hobby was watching her daughter’s cameras to see the birds at the feeders, the chickens, and whether they were home or not. She hosted every holiday at her house and could never wait for the holiday season. Christmas was her favorite time of year. She loved shopping for gifts she thought everyone would absolutely love, and they usually did. She would pull out her little tree with the big gaudy balls that made the family laugh and set the fruit cake that her husband Mike gave her as a joke one year. That same fruit cake has been placed under the tree every year since then. Her grandchildren (Heather and Nathan) have spent many years arguing over who would inherit that very fruit cake. Her family will continue to set it out in its crinkled paper and smashed bow and argue about who gets to keep it because it tradition. Some of her greatest joy came from the many laughs and fun times shared when they all gathered. She worked many places and met many special people throughout her life and treasured the many friendships she built with coworkers who became like family. During her later years she worked at the Benedictine School helping to take care of the many special kids, some whose family have stayed in touch through the years. She is survived by her daughter, Amy Roe Young and son in law, Barry, her “adopted daughters” Tammy Hubbard and Julie Meekins. She also left behind her grandchildren, Heather Young and her longtime partner, Christian Wilson, and Nathan Young, as well as her great granddaughter, Aubrie Lewis. Her memory will be cherished by her adopted family, Gilda Nichols, Amanda Kracke, Elizabeth Kracke, and Jeffrey Lewis Jr. She also leaves behind nieces and nephews, Jennifer Wade (John), Jason Walbert (Myalisa), Misty Roe, Ricky Roe Jr., and Michelle McKinney (Aaron), as well as many great nieces and nephews. There will be no funeral or viewing as those were her wishes. We will have a Celebration of Life at a date later, and her interment will be at Eastern Shore Veteran’s Cemetery at Hurlock.
