Stephen Morris Stairs

Stephen Morris Stairs slipped away to be with Jesus on July 1, 2023, at the young age of 64. It is comforting to know that he was at home surrounded by his loving family and great friends. Stephen was born in Baltimore, MD, on September 9, 1958, to the late Ashley J. Stairs, Sr., and Mary Jeanette (Kahl) Stairs. Stephen is survived by his beloved, wife Sheila F. Stairs; their two children, Mariah Crystal Stairs and Elijah Fletcher Stairs; his dear siblings, Katherine Ellen Wright (Warren), Carol Ann Sturdivant (Ron), and Michael Joseph Stairs; his loving nieces and nephews, Jeremy D. Morrissette (Michele), Brian Trageser (Andreas), and Lesley Clough (Steven); his beloved great- nieces and nephews, Marissa M. Morrissette, Kaitlyn L. Morrissette, Nicolas J. Morrissette, and Kaylan Truax; his many cherished cousins, the “Kahl” clan; and gazillions of friends, extended family, brothers & sisters in Christ, and his recovery family. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Ashley Joseph Stairs, Jr., and nephew, Ashely J. Stairs, III. As a child, his family lived in Baltimore, MD, and later moved permanently to Cape St. Claire in Annapolis, MD. He attended elementary school at St. Matthew’s, St. Mary's, and Cape St. Claire. He graduated from Severna Park High in 1976. Stephen also completed two years of college. Some of his many passions as a young boy were fishing, hunting, swimming, playing sports, crabbing and bowling. Making people laugh was his all-time favorite thing. He worked at Busch's Chesapeake Inn in the kitchen. Later he worked with his father as a custom cabinet builder in Fells Point. For a brief time, he had a route at Coca-Cola. Stephen met the love of his life, Sheila Fletcher, at the end of 1988. They were dating by February of 1989 and were engaged within six months. They moved to Grasonville, MD. Later they built their own home on Kent Island and raised two beautiful children. He settled in his trade as a custom tile and marble installer, owning his own business for 25 years. He cherished his family, friends, and his church family. His passion was to worship the Lord by playing his drums with "The Bridge" worship team during the services at and community outreach. He truly loved God and served others for God's glory. As an adult, Stephen enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fixing things around the house, boating, playing the drums, and wood working. Stephen is loved and will always be missed by the people whose lives he touched. In Christ, it is never “goodbye” just “see you later.“ A memorial service will be held at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home at 106 Shamrock Rd., Chester MD, on Saturday July 15, 2023. A visitation will start at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral service to begin at 11 a.m. There will be a celebration of life at Stephen’s and Shelia’s home afterwards. Stephen’s family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be sent to “The Bridge" in care of Stephen Stairs, located at 216 H Log Canoe Cir., Stevensville, MD 21666.
