Shirley T. Smith

Shirley T. Smith, of Easton, died at her home on Thursday, January 15, 2004. She was 78. Born in Easton, October 24, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Pauline Smith. After graduating from Easton High School in 1942, she attended Salisbury State Teachers College which is now Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1945. She later earned her Master of Arts in Education from the George Washington University in September of 1968. She first taught at the North End Elementary School in Greenbelt, MD from 1945 until 1947 and then at the Alta Vista Elementary School in Bethesda, MD until 1949. She left the teaching profession to work as an Elementary Statistical Clerk at the Group Hospital, Inc in Washington, D.C. for a year and then in the Bookkeeping Department with Maryland Credit Finance Corp. in Easton for a year. Returning to teaching in 1952, she taught at the Country School in Easton for four years, then at the Preston Elementary School for eight years. From 1964 until 1967, she taught at the Cordova Elementary School, then at the Idlewild Elementary School in Easton for four years before becoming Principal at the Whitemarsh Elementary School in Trappe, a position she held until retiring in 1984. A member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority, she founded a Talbot County Chapter of the sorority. A Life Member of the National Education Association of the United States, she received a Certificate of Appreciation form the MD Dept. of Education in 1984 for 32 years of service and a Certificate of Merit from the Talbot County Education Association. An enthusiastic business person, she enjoyed real estate speculation. Her other interests included tennis and going to the beach. Ms Smith is survived by a close personal friend, Doris M. Thompson, and several cousins. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 20th, at 2 P.M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton. Memorial donations may be made to the Easton Volunteer Fire Dept.
