Shirley Moffett

Shirley S. Shahan Moffett of Ocean City passed away at her home on Dec. 25, 2010 and joined her Lord with her children by her side after she lost her battle with cancer. She was 78 Mrs. Moffett was born August 4th 1932 to the late Charles B. & Catherine V. Benton Stevens and grew up in Rock Hall where she raised her family. Shirley graduated from Rock Hall High School. She married Horace G. Shahan, they had three children. In 1982 she moved to Ocean City, MD and married life long Rock Hall resident Maxwell B. Moffett on the beach in Assateague. The love of the Ocean City air kept her there until her death on Christmas morning. She would return to Kent County many times over the years and stay with her dear friends Ada and Claude Joyner. She was a surrogate mother to many over the years and held a special love for her nieces and nephews. Mrs. Moffett will be well remembered for being one of the finest cooks and bakers on the Eastern Shore. She loved her family along with any others that walked through her door, cooking for all of them. Her strong faith in God and her church kept her safe until the Lord called her home. Mrs. Moffett’s career spanned several jobs including the Rock Hall Cannery, Vita Foods, Fox’s Furniture Store before retiring from the Rock Hall Shirt Factory. She was a member of the Rock Hall Seventh Day Adventist Church and attended regular services in Ocean City and Salisbury, MD. She was preceded in death by her husband Maxwell Moffett, Brothers Charles E. Stevens, Bobby Stevens, Vernon D. Stevens Sr. Sisters Catherine Stevens Joiner, Genevieve Stevens Dowling, and Viola Stevens Yerkie She is survived by her brother Charles B. Stevens Jr. of Vero Beach, FL, her three children; Sharon S. Shahan of Ocean Pines, MD, Charles S. Shahan of Green Castle, PA, and Jeffrey. L. Shahan of Trappe, MD, two step-daughters; Dorothy Yeager Millington, MD. Carol Ann Moffett of Las Vegas, NV, six grandchildren; Justin Kelley, Crystal Shahan, Josh Kelley, Laura Shahan, Ciara Kelley, and Thaddeus Shahan and three great grandchildren Masen Shahan, Gia and Gabrielle Kelley Shirley will be greatly missed by all. A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 1, 2011 from 5 to 7 pm at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Road Chestertown, MD. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 2 pm at Rock Hall Seventh Day Adventist Church in Rock Hall, MD. A graveside service will follow in Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall, MD.
