Scott D. Livie

Scott David Livie, 53, died in his home on Thursday, April 27, of colorectal cancer. Elected as a Kent County Commissioner in 2002, Scott was also the principal and founder of Chesapeake Benefits Services, Inc., an employee benefit firm, and a former trustee of Chesapeake College. Scott’s many interests included lacrosse, hunting, and fishing. Into each of these venues, Scott brought his leadership, vision, skill, and generosity. Scott graduated from McDonogh School in 1971, where he was recognized on the Wall of Fame for his athletic achievements. He graduated from Brown University in 1975, where he acquired a degree in American Civilization and a cadre of lifelong friends. Scott came to Chestertown, MD, in 1976 as an assistant lacrosse coach at Washington College. At the same time, he used his skills as an outdoorsman to develop a successful hunting guide business. In 1989, Scott founded Chesapeake Benefit Services, building on skills he acquired at FAM&M Insurance. Over the years, Scott’s business steadily grew; at the time of his death, he employed a staff of eight people and serviced local, regional, and national accounts. He served as president of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce in 2000, and was widely recognized for his commitment, warmth, and genuine concern for others. Scott served as a member of the Board of Trustees for Chesapeake College for 12 years, serving twice as the Chairman of the Board. He approached every issue with wisdom, and a balanced appreciation for the big picture. He resigned his appointment upon election to the Kent County Commission in 2002, Scott’s service as a commissioner was marked by his vision, and integrity, and his great love for the county and all the people in it. Scott was beloved as a coach and a mentor. In each of his avocations, he generously developed skill in others. Many young men and women have been touched by Scott’s patience and warmth. He coached lacrosse teams at Kent County High School, at Gunston Day School, and on a variety of summer leagues. He was also an enthusiastic player even as he was undergoing chemotherapy. He played in the 2000 and 2002 World Games in the Grand Master Division, and was a member of the 1999 tournament All-Star team in Lake Placid. Scott was deeply blessed by the bonds of his many and authentic friendships. He took great joy in the traditional activities that marked every season: dove dinners, duck hunting at his home and in Canada, crowded Thanksgiving Day blinds, turkey hunting in the Carolinas in April, fishing and crabbing in the spring and summer, and the annual family trip to Maine each August. Scott will be deeply missed in every season. Scott is survived by his loving wife, Anne; his daughters, Kate Livie, Meghan Livie, and Sherri Spray; and his wife’s children, Katie Gelderman and Ryan Smith. He is also survived by his beloved mother, Jeanne Livie Tarring; his sister, Stephanie Vellegia; and his brother, Bruce Livie. Services will be held at Shrewsbury Parish Church on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at 3:00 pm. Friends may pay their respects at the church beginning at 1:00 pm.
