Sarah "Sadie" Smith

Mrs. Sarah V. “Sadie” Smith of Sudlersville, MD, died on Thursday, May 17, 2012, in the Chester River Hospital Center in Chestertown, MD. She was 93. Mrs. Smith was born in Sudlersville, the the daughter of the late J. Noble and Ora Marvel Hardesty. Mrs. Smith was a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for many years in Sudlersville retiring in 1984. Ms. “Sadie” has been a very active member in her community for a long time. She started the PTA at the Sudlersville Elementary School. She was a active member of the Calvary-Asbury United Methodist Church in Sudlersville for many years serving as a Sunday school teacher and Superintendent. Ms “Sadie” and her husband, Foster, were members of the Young Adult group from the church that initiated the revival of Dudley’s Chapel Church near Sudlersville. She was a member of the Sudlersville Homemakers; she worked for many years with the local 4-H group helping with sewing; and she enjoyed helping with the 4-H Fair serving as a hostess in the Home Arts section. She volunteered for many years with the Sudlersville Vol. Fire Co. carnival, and also served as a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout leader. Her Girl Scout leadership began many years ago, and she was one of the founding members of the Top of the Hill Club. Ms. “Sadie” loved to cook for family and friends and always enjoyed their company. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith is predeceased by her husband, Foster A. Smith, in 1998, and a sister, Marion Hickman. She is survived by two daughters, Faye Williams and her husband, Richard of Sudlersville, MD, and Joan Smith of Dickeyville, MD; one son, Robert (Debra) Smith of Easton, MD; a sister, Lillian Skinner of Sudlersville; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the Calvary Asbury United Methodist Church in Sudlersville, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m. Friends and family may also call Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m in the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St,. Millington, MD. Interment will be in the Sudlersville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her memory be made to the Calvary-Asbury U.M.
