Sarah Megargee

Sarah Wells Megargee of Neavitt died at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the age of 82. She was born in New York City on December 28, 1926, the eldest child of Marshall Swain Wells and Dixie Love Wells. When she was a small child, they returned to their home in Charlottesville, VA. After graduating from Lane High School, she went to work in her uncle’s bookshop while he served in the ambulance corps in Europe during World War II. She met her husband, the late Henry Preaut Megargee, Jr., while he was attending the University of Virginia Law School. They married in 1949 and moved to Southern New Jersey and raised their children in Brigantine. In 1981 she and her husband retired to Neavitt, MD and lived there for the rest of their lives. She is survived by her children, Amanda Megargee Sutton of Petersburg, VA, Moira Marshall Megargee of South Deerfield, MA, and Brian Douglas Megargee and his wife, Mary Quercia Megargee of Kennedyville, MD, and her beloved grandchildren, James Marshall Megargee Sutton and Paige Buchanan Megargee. She is also survived by her four siblings, Alice Wells Kinter of Chevy Chase, MD, Richard S. Wells of Columbia, SC, Samuel B. Wells of Charlottesville, VA, and Courtney Wells Sugerman of Charlottesville, VA. In addition to her family, she was devoted to the St. Michaels Library and Christ Church, St. Michaels. She loved singing, reading, charity work, gardening, knitting, and playing tennis. She started singing in choirs as a child, and from 1982 until her death she sang in the choir at Christ Church, St. Michaels. A homemaker and avid volunteer, she spent many years in New Jersey working for the Children’s Seashore House of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the Charity League of Atlantic City, and served as a Senior Hostess for the Miss America Pageant. In St. Michaels, she was a longtime volunteer of the St. Michaels Library, was very active in Christ Church, and a member of the St. Andrews Society. She and her husband participated in the Waterfowl Festival for more than twenty years. A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 17th at 11:00 am, at Christ Church, St. Michaels, corner of Talbot and Willow.
