Samuel Avery Wood

Samuel Avery Wood, a loving companion, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, at the age of 89. Sam was born in New York on July 14, 1936, to Samuel Aldrich Wood and Mari (Pat) Louise Behrman. He was known for his humor, generosity, story-telling ability and continually improving golf game. His passion for golf was a constant motivation for him to work on his health so he could resume swinging a club. He loved his many animals over the years especially his Great Danes. He will be dearly missed by his many friends and family. Sam is survived by his three children, Carrie-Melinda Bauermeister, Richard Stephen Amoruso (Suzanne) and Samantha Ann Wood Regan (Robert); four grandchildren, Danielle (Eric), Stephen, Christina (Rob) and Shelby; one great-grandchild Samuel. A wake will be held on November 30, 2025 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm and 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral home in Easton, MD. A graveside service will take place on December 1, 2025 at 11:00 am at Tilghman Memorial Cemetery. Sam’s milestones were many: Sam married Carole V. Williams in 1967, and gained a daughter named Carrie whom he asked permission to marry her mother. Carrie took care of Sam in his later years and they enjoyed many adventures together while traveling in his camper. Sam also enjoyed playing the tuba in High School then later in life he played in Freeport Fire Dept Marching Band (NY) where he marched side-by-side with Samantha playing the traditional marching classics. Sam frequently spoke of his patriotic family connection to law enforcement and was proud when his daughter Samantha joined the ranks in 2003. His son-in-law Robert, also law enforcement, helped him keep his property in order and they enjoyed tackling many projects together. In 2006, Sam became a grandfather for the first time with Shelby who brought him great joy. He enjoyed taking pictures of her as a baby and enjoyed watching her grow into a fine young lady. Sam learned that he had a son in 2013, named Richard who enhanced his life with his wonderful family including his wife Suzanne who loved and adored him. He was blessed with three additional grandchildren; Dani, Stephen, Christina, who made him as proud as possible. Sam was elated to learn his granddaughter Dani named her first born after him to help carry on a family tradition. Sam’s grandchildren have either graduated from college, or are in the process of obtaining a college degree. After the death of his wife, he reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Linda whom he would visit in New Mexico and spend most nights talking about their love of classical music, novel writing and shared memories of things passed. Sam worked in executive management at many financial institutions over his career and made the decision to retire to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1997. He played the golf course at Harbortowne and remarked how the course would be challenging enough for him to play when he grew old so he bought a home in Sherwood. He joined a senior golf group called MISGA and played golf courses all over the Delmarva Peninsula. He made great friends and won many pairs of socks, which he disliked wearing. Sam also worked as a Bridge Tender for over 20 years at the Knapps Narrows Bridge in order to buy more golf clubs. His last stop was a move to Tilghman Island where he bought a historical home with Carrie that he loved. Sam always revered the waterfront history of the area. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to Mandy Crow-Berry for the great care she showed to Sam for many years. His was a life well lived.
