Robert McClellan Tiffany

“Tiff”, surrounded by loving family, died on May 5, 2006, at The Hospice House in Easton, MD, after complications from a stroke. He was born in Syracuse, NY on October 14, 1919 to Clayton William and Mae Genevieve Tiffany. He graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse in 1937 and in 1941 from Amherst College, where he made many lifelong friends. Tiff enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp immediately after Pearl Harbor and served as a bombardier in a B-17. He was shot down on February 24, 1944 on his 43rd mission, and was a POW for 14 months in Barth, Germany. He was a 1st Lieutenant and was awarded The Air Medal with 7 Oak Leaf Clusters and a Unit Citation for his wartime services. He worked for Plunkett Webster, Inc. as a lumber broker in New Rochelle, NY for more than 50 years. A long time resident of Pelham, NY, he and his wife of 52 years, Weetzie (who predeceased Tiff in April 2004), made their home in Southbury, CT after 1995. Tiff is survived by his 3 children and their families: Susan Tiffany Pugh of Easton, MD, Peter Nelson Tiffany of Winchester, MA, and Molly Tiffany Cross of Larchmont, NY. Tiff also leaves behind 5 beloved grandchildren and eleven nieces and nephews, whom he treated as his children. A superb athlete Tiff played ice hockey, squash and tennis at Amherst. He was an avid golfer, enjoying many happy hours on the Pelham Country Club golf course. Until 3 years ago he skated regularly with the Heritage Village Skating Club. Tiff was a remarkable friend, father, father-in-law, grandfather and uncle. He was a devoted husband and son-in-law. He always had a kind word and remembered small details that made you realize he cared. He was always the first to offer help and the last to request it. He will be sorely missed, but he loved life and would want us to cherish all that is good. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday May 20 at 10:30am, at Huguenot Memorial Church in Pelham, NY.
