Robert C. Canavello

Robert Charles Canavello of Easton, MD died on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Talbot Hospice House, Easton. He was 82. Born March 29, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Charles Delmonico and Mary Elizabeth Curran Canavello. He attended PS98 in Douglaston, NY through 1940 and then, in 1944, graduated from Bayside High School, NY. In 1946 he graduated from the New York Merchant Marine Academy at Ft. Schuyler, NY and sailed the Victory Ship SS Attleboro. During his working career he was Sales Manager for NY Silicate Book Slate Co., President of Arcana products, and Yacht Broker for Flagship Yachts in Port Washington, NY and Willis Marine in Huntington, NY. Mr. Canavello is a descendent of the Delmonico family that started the New York City restaurant of that name. He was a member of the Young Presidents Organization, the Port Washington Yacht Club, Nassau Country Club, Huntington Country Club, Sewanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club and was President of the Plandome Field and Marine Club. He was a golfer and avid racing sailor. A longtime competitor in the frostbite sailing at Sewanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Dyer Dhow dinghies in Oyster Bay, NY, he also raced in several Newport to Bermuda races and greatly enjoyed cruising with family and friends. He especially enjoyed his retirement years on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Mr. Canavello is survived by his wife, Marcia-Marie Weber Canavello; two sons, Robert G. Canavello of Arlington, Mass, and Douglas A. Canavello and his wife Kathy Rooney of Summerfield, NC; three step-sons, Thomas W. Fowler IV and his wife Susan of West Milford, NJ, Neal L. Fowler and his wife Kathleen of Dennis, Mass, and Christopher H. Fowler and his wife Maryellen of Rehoboth, Mass; one grandson, Peter Canavello; eight step-grandchildren, Tommy V, Elizabeth, Chelsea Rose, Andrew, Nicholas, Anne Marie, Ted, and Suzanne Fowler; and a step-sister, Celeste Stephens of Douglaston, NY. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Delmonico “Tod” Canavello, Jr. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 4:00 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial in Brooklyn, New York will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.
