Robert Allen Smith

Robert Allen Smith of Queen Anne, MD died Saturday, August 26, 2006 at the Corsica Hills Center. He was 83. Born in Baltimore, MD on February 16, 1923, he was the son of the late, Henry Robert Smith and Gwendolyn Jeannette Bushell Smith. He was raised in Baltimore, attending high school at City College. He continued his education, graduating from the Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Smith was in the Army during World War II, serving from 1942 to 1945 in Adak in the Aleutian Islands. He was a chemical engineer, a career that took him all over the world. In November, 1962 he married Sarah Lillian Jamar and they lived in Colombia and Venezuela in South America as well as in Europe. In the Netherlands, they had a houseboat called “The Rumtiki”. They returned to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1976, where they had a houseboat in Georgetown, MD. She ran the store at Kentmoor and he began working at Tidewater Publishing. He retired in 2002. In his spare time, Mr. Smith was a writer and a poet, writing and illustrating a book called Rhymes for the Mob, by “Tuckahoe Bob”. He was a voracious reader in his younger years, and also enjoyed playing games on his computer and solving crossword puzzles and cryptograms. Mr. Smith was an avid dart player, playing in pubs here and in England. He was a Mason and a life member of the American Legion, Post 18. He is survived by his wife, Sarah; six children, Gwendolyn Newell and husband, Clayton of Galena, MD, Robert A. Smith, Jr. and wife, Deborah of Chestertown, MD, Syrta Ero and husband, Graham of Still Pond, MD, Thomas Hamilton Smith and wife, Cheryl of Manchester, NH, Henry Kevin Smith and wife, Jeannie of Betterton, MD, and Rebecca Ann Smith of Baltimore, MD; a step-son, Douglas Whitely and wife, Betty June of Still Pond, MD; eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. His daughter, Marie Elizabeth Smith, predeceased him. Donations in Mr. Smith’s memory may be made to the Queen Anne – Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 226, Queen Anne, MD 21657 or the American Legion Post 18 Building Fund, 2619 Centreville Road, Centreville, MD 21617. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday August 30, 2006 at 11am at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A. in Centreville, MD, where friends and family may call the evening of Tuesday, August 29th between 6pm and 8pm. Interment will follow the service at Chesterfield Cemetery.
