Richard "Dick" William Story

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard (“Dick”) William Story, 79, of Betterton, MD. Surviving Dick are his wife of 57 years, Virginia; his children, Karen Cherry (Stephen), and Jeff Story (Lauren), his six grandchildren: Ryann, Nathan, Ella, Theo, Rue and Joshua, his brothers Jack (Linda) and Martin (Dee), and his sisters-in-law Candi Sorge (John), Liz Clark and Mary Alice Munson (Don). Dick began his career as an announcer for WCTR Radio in Chestertown, MD. In 1966 he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany where he commanded the 84th Engineering Company. Upon leaving the Army, he went back to WCTR before moving to WTTR in Westminster, MD where he was the News Director, Announcer and Sports Play-by-Play. In 1979 he joined the Carroll County Economic Development Commission where he became the first full-time Executive Director. He also held leadership positions at the Greater Baltimore Committee, the Maryland Economic Growth Associates (MEGA), the Washington Baltimore Regional Association and the Baltimore County Economic Development Commission. He served as the CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority (“HCEDA”) for nearly 18 years where he created the NeoTech Incubator, the Howard Tech Council among many other award-winning programs. Dick finished his career at Howard Bank where he was the Senior VP, Community Relations & Governmental Affairs. His career is marked with countless awards and recognitions, some of which include the Corridor Person of the Year (2006), Maryland Economic Development Association Hall of Fame (2006), Leadership Howard County Distinguished Alumnus Award (2007), HCEDA Lifetime Achievement Award (2013), Leadership Howard County Legacy Award (2016), Central Maryland Chamber Lifetime Achievement Award (2017), NAIOP Service Provider Award (2018) and Howard County Chamber Exemplar Award (2018). Dick was generous with his time to non-profit organizations through volunteer work and Board service. He served on the Board of the Baltimore Regional Council for the Boy Scouts of America and was named the Good Scout of the Year by Baltimore County in 1990 and Howard County in 2000. He was the American Cancer Society’s Maryland Volunteer of the Year in 1983 and they issued him a National Leadership Medal in 1991. He was always willing to support numerous organizations by lending his legendary voice as emcee of events, galas and fundraisers. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Dick's memory to a charity of your choice. This way his legacy of giving back can be honored through the support of many organizations. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 11am at the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown, 905 Gateway Dr., Chestertown, MD.
