Philip Andrew Zaffere

Philip Andrew Zaffere, 85, of Easton, MD, died on Monday, January 4, 2016, at the University of Maryland Medical Center at Easton. He was born in Federalsburg on November 12, 1930, son of the late Francis Donato Zaffere and Anna Mabel Huhn. Philip’s college education was interrupted by the need to return to Federalsburg and run the family bakery during his father’s illness. The bakery became his life’s work. Founded by his father in 1912, Zaffere’s Bakery grew from a small company whose products included pies, sweet rolls, and Sally Ann bread, to Shoreman Food Technologies, which produced commercial products such as the crumb for Stove Top stuffing, and breading for Mrs. Paul’s frozen foods. With no formal training in design or engineering, Philip’s innate creativity and willingness to take risks and think outside the box led him to develop the process for making crumb for Stove Top stuffing, and design the ovens and other equipment to streamline and bring consistency to the products. One newspaper article named him the “Crumb King.” At one time the Federalsburg plant produced crumb for Stove Top for the entire country. In 1988, Philip sold Shoreman Food Technologies to Pet Foods and retired. Shrewd as a businessman, he also had a strong sense of playfulness and mischief, often conveyed with a telltale raise of his eyebrows. Friendships he took seriously; he was a loyal and generous friend. He recognized needs and quietly worked to supply them; faithfully visiting friends and family who were sick or shut-ins. In addition to his parents, Philip was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Monroe and Agnes Orban; his brother, Frank Zaffere, and by his beloved wife Carol Kavanaugh Zaffere. Survivors include stepson, Kevin Kavanaugh; nephews, John and Richard Orban, David, and John Monroe, and Frank Zaffere; nieces, Mary Harrison, and Anna Marie Saintonge, and Rosemary Sanders; as well as Scout, his faithful and constant companion; Vicki Winstead, Gregory Sanchez, Mary McBee, and Brian Sanchez were all like family to him. Philip’s life will be celebrated with a funeral liturgy at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1210 S. Washington Street, Easton, MD 21601 on Monday, January 11, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Oxford Cemetery. In honor of Phil’s lifelong love of animals, memorial contributions may be made to your local humane society.
