Paul Ernest Mead

Paul Ernest Mead, 90, of Chestertown, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home on April 18, 2025. Born on January 4, 1935, in Hampton, New York, Paul was the cherished son of the late William Arthur Mead and Aurelia Cornelila Vaughn. He grew up in the quiet charm of Upstate New York and graduated high school in 1952. On August 19, 1956, Paul married the love of his life, Patty. They met through Patty’s friend Ann Crandell, and after a first date at the movies, it didn’t take long for their hearts to know—they were married just ten months later. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, love, and laughter. In 1964, Paul graduated from the Metropolitan Police Department Police Academy, beginning a proud 27-year career in law enforcement. Through dedication and leadership, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant before retiring in December 1989. Paul carried his sharp mind, calm demeanor, and sense of justice into every role he served. Outside of work, Paul’s passions were many. He loved playing guitar and listening to bluegrass music—and found joy in serving others through his involvement with Gideons International. A man of deep faith, Paul loved the Lord and lived that devotion daily, always putting his family and community first. He was sharp-minded, sweet-tempered, and endlessly giving. Whether sitting around the kitchen table, catching up with friends and family, or simply enjoying a good meal, Paul found joy in life’s simple pleasures. His wit and wisdom were often punctuated by his favorite saying, “Women, dogs, and hickory trees—the more you beat ‘um, the better you be’s,” a phrase that never failed to raise eyebrows and laughter. Paul will be dearly missed by all who knew him—for his heart, his humor, and the steady way he loved. Preceded in death by his son Lance Paul Mead Survived by his wife Patricia Marlene Mead, his son Lawrence Arthur Mead (wife Lorrie) of Centreville, MD, daughter Valerie Marlene Haines (husband Brian) of Ridgley, MD, 5 grandchildren, Jennifer Mead, Lisa Wilkens, Jerrod Waite, Kelsey Waite and Jacob Waite. Also 5 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM (ET) at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 408 S. Liberty Street, Centreville, MD 21617. Burial will follow at Stevensville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Paul’s honor.
