Paul Joseph Caggiano

With profound love, we announce the passing of Paul Joseph Caggiano of Centreville, Maryland. Paul passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, in exceptional care at Compass Regional Hospice’s The Barnette Center in Centreville; he was 89 years old. Born August 8, 1936, in Washington, DC, Paul was the son of Charles and Madeleine Caggiano. Paul graduated from Gonzaga High School in Washington, DC in 1954, and Mount Saint Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, MD in 1958 where he majored in Economics. Later, Paul pursued graduate studies at American University in Washington, DC. Paul served in the Army National Guard in both the District of Columbia and Maryland. Paul’s last assignment was with Battery C, 2d Missile Battalion, 70th Artillery which in the early days of the Cold War was primarily responsible for the United States’ first surface-to-air missile defense operations. Honorably discharged in September 1964, he reached the rank of Sargeant, US Army Reserve. Paul married the love of his life, Carol Sue Smith, on April 23, 1960. Together, Paul and Sue raised five children. Paul built an extraordinary life defined by hard work, unwavering integrity, and a deep devotion to those he loved. Paul was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman. An accomplished waterfowl hunter, Paul loved hunting ducks with his sons on the Eastern Shore in the marshland around Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. After a successful early career focused on sales, in 1972 Paul joined the federal government in the Federal Supply Service of the General Services Administration (GSA). Over ten years Paul rose to Assistant Commissioner for Contracts in GSA. During his time at GSA Paul was a Charter Member of the Senior Executive Service, implemented a national contracting system and held top-level administrative positions in the Office of Federal Management Policy. In 1982 Paul’s successful experience at GSA provided the opportunity to join Washington Management Group, Inc. (WMG), where he remained until he sold the company as he entered retirement almost 20 years later. Under Paul’s leadership, WMG became the preeminent Washington, DC based consulting firm providing contracting and procurement assistance to companies that sell products and services to the federal government. Through WMG, Paul also led the Coalition for Common Sense in Government Procurement (Coalition), a Washington, DC based trade association representing companies selling goods and services to the federal government. Under Paul’s leadership the Coalition built a strong reputation for partnering with federal officials to create common sense commercial product procurement systems. The Coalition survives to this day. For all his professional accomplishments, Paul’s greatest success and proudest legacy was his family. A wonderful husband and father, Paul had an adventurous spirit and led his family on many famous (and infamous) trips and excursions. A steadfast and constant presence for his family, Paul had a gift for making everyone he met feel seen, heard, and valued. Paul was predeceased by his parents, his one brother, Charles Caggiano and by two sons, Joseph Paul Caggiano and Steven Charles Caggiano. Paul is survived by his wife, Carol Sue Caggiano, Carolyn Caggiano Curry (Barry), James M. Caggiano, Michael A. Caggiano (Garefo), Kathleen Caggiano (Joe) and Kellie Caggiano (Steven), fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, along with his brother-in-law and great friend, Alan M. Sonner, one nephew and three nieces. Funeral arrangements are being managed by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Homes in Centreville, MD. There will be a graveside service at Chesterfield Cemetery in Centreville, MD at 11:00am on Friday, August 7, 2026, one day shy of Paul’s 90th birthday. A reception at the family home on Grove Creek will follow the service.
