Paul Edward Barents

Paul E. Barents was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on 30 July 1944. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a B.A. in History in 1966. He became an officer in the Marine Corps, served in Vietnam, and was wounded. He earned a Masters in History from Villanova in 2008. He worked in real estate and construction for a fast food company for 14 years. Paul retired on June 30, 2017 after working 40 years for a utility infrastructure contractor outside of Philadelphia. He has been married for 59 years to the former Kathryn Schlothan of Andover, Massachusetts and is survived by their two children and their spouses. Matthew, a retired Navy Commander Aviator, now a pilot for United Airlines and his wife, Jamie Barents. Carlene, a Doctor of physical therapy for disabled children and a collegiate lacrosse official and her husband, Brian Kuczma. Paul is proud of his four grandchildren – they were his primary purpose in life: Riley, Brayden, Mick, and Samantha, who inherited their good looks, intelligence and charm from their grandmother. His biggest fear was that he did not teach them enough, but rest assured it was a job well done. Paul is predeceased by his parents, Douglas Edward and Marcella Noella Barents, and survived by his sister and brothers: Maureen, Bruce and Tom, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Paul stayed active throughout his life skydiving, skiing, golfing, rowing and cycling. He had his private pilot’s license and holds a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Paul learned to play the banjo for the entertainment of his grandchildren and the annoyance of his wife. Later in life he found CrossFit and a community that embraced him. Paul volunteered with Talbot Hospice to help those at the end of their lives by reading to them and honoring Veterans. It was these same people, angels on Earth, who came to him and walked by his side at the end of his. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 11am at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, S. Washington St, Easton, MD. Burial at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico at a later date. In lieu of flowers and gifts for the family, they are asking that donations be made to Talbot Hospice in Paul’s name so they can continue their heavenly work.
