Norman Charles Dulak

Norman Charles Dulak, of Chestertown, Maryland, passed away unexpectedly at his home on December 9, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on October 20, 1940, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Norman was the son of the late Joseph O. Dulak and Helen Lutz Dulak. He graduated from Horlick High School in Racine, Wisconsin, in 1958. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966 and a PhD in Physiological Chemistry in 1970, both from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His postdoctoral studies were completed under the mentorship of Nobel Laureate Howard Temin from 1970 to 1972. In 1984, he added a Juris Doctor degree from Fordham Law School in New York to his impressive academic achievements. Norman proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1964, receiving an honorable discharge. He served on the lead ship of the blockade of Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban missle crisis. Throughout his career, Norman held esteemed academic appointments, including positions at the University of Kansas Medical School (1972–1974), the State University of Albany, New York (1974–1978), and New York University (1978–1982). Transitioning to the field of patent law, he worked with the law firm Pennie & Edmonds (1983–1986) and Hoffman-La Roche (1987–1990) before serving as the Director of Biotechnology Patents at Schering-Plough Corporation until his retirement in 1999. Norman moved to Kent County, MD upon retirement and became an avid and excellent wildlife photographer. He and Linda took many trips to far-flung lands to photograph wildlife. His photographs cover the walls in their home. Norman’s other passion was his love for his Dobermans. He and Linda fostered many Dobermans for Doberman Pinscher Rescue of PA, Inc. His love and kindness for all living things helped many Dobermans find find new homes. He was seen daily walking one or another Doberman along the road. Norman is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Dulak, and his loving daughter, Michelle Thomson (George) of Salem, OR. He was predeceased by his daughter, Tamara Dulak. He is sorely missed by his Dobermans, Jasper and Mazie. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Doberman Pinscher Rescue of PA, 1943 W. Cedar Street, Allentown, PA 18104. Norman will be remembered for his remarkable intellect, dedication to his work, love for all living things and the lasting impact he had on his field and loved ones.
