Monika Ellen Marlen Gunther Ireland of Easton, MD passed away peacefully on April 26, 2024 in her home surrounded by loved ones. Monika was born on August 5, 1944 to parents Ottomar Manfred Gunther and Elfriede Annaliese Margarete Gunther in Sanderbusch, Germany. Monika worked for the United States Government in Frankfurt, Germany where she met her husband, Al Ireland. The pair were married March 17, 1971 and had three children; Andreas “Andy” Gunther (Victoria) of Bremen, GA, Michael “Mike” Ireland (Carolyn) of Elkton, MD and Ramona “Mona” Hutchison (Alan) of Cordova, MD. Monika and Al moved to the United States following Al’s retirement from the United States Army in 1977. Monika went on to become a United States Citizen on June 19, 1981. Soon following, Monika became a Certified Nursing Assistant specializing in Geriatrics. Monika loved being a caregiver. Whether through her work or ensuring her family and friends were cared for and more importantly, fed! In addition to her love of caregiving, Monika could be found most days outside keeping her yard looking pristine. Strangers would often stop by to inquire who did her yard work to which she would proudly reply, “I do”! Monika was a member of Fairview Church of the Brethren where she could often be seen clapping in tune to her favorite hymns and singing the words she knew and making up the rest as she went along. Then after Church, it was off to lunch with the ladies. Monika was predeceased by her parents, Ottomar and Elfriede Gunther; her husband, Al Ireland; and her brother, Harry Gunther. She is survived by her sister, Hannelore Messer (Jerry); her sisters-in-law, Sharon Ireland, Susan Covington and Joan Stover (Gene); her brother-in-law, David Ireland; her children, Andy Gunther (Victoria), Mike Ireland (Carolyn) and Mona Hutchison (Alan); her grandchildren, Christopher Wilson (Morgan), Jonathan Gunther (Brianna), AJ Hutchison (Lauren), Cody Hutchison, Adrianna Hutchison, Katelyn Ireland, Michaela Ireland, Evan Ireland and Justin “Tuffy” Hutchison; her great grandchildren, Atlee Hutchison, Ella Hutchison and Cameron Gunther. As well as many nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 6-8 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 200 S. Harrison Street, Easton, MD. A funeral service will be held on May 10, 2024 at 10 AM at Fairview Church of the Brethren, 11243 Chapel Road, Cordova, MD. Burial will follow at “Beulah” Eastern Shore Veteran’s Cemetery, 6827 E New Market Elwood Road, Hurlock, MD 21643. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to Talbot Hospice, 586 Cynwood Dr, Easton, MD 21601.
